Netflix’s latest historical drama is quickly attracting attention, with Lead Children climbing to seventh place on the streaming platform’s UK chart just days after its release.
The series tells the story of Polish doctor Jolanta Wadowska-Król and her efforts to help children suffering from lead poisoning near the Szopienice Steelworks. Its grim industrial setting and true-story inspiration have already prompted comparisons with acclaimed dramas including Chernobyl and Toxic Town.

The true story at the heart of Lead Children
Set in Upper Silesia during the 1970s, the drama follows the young doctor as she begins noticing an alarming pattern among children living close to the Szopienice Steelworks.
Many are becoming seriously ill from lead poisoning caused by heavy-metal contamination.
After recognizing the scale of the problem, Wadowska-Król attempts to protect and treat the affected children. Her efforts also place her in conflict with the communist state apparatus as she tries to confront a public-health crisis unfolding within the working-class community.
According to the show’s synopsis, Lead Children combines the industrial atmosphere of 1970s Upper Silesia with the political pressures surrounding Wadowska-Król’s determination to help the children.

One fan declared before even finishing the opening episode that the drama felt comparable to Chernobyl, predicting it would become one of Netflix’s most respected productions and describing it as a “must watch.”
Another praised Lead Children as a “superb watch” with strong performances.
A third viewer admitted that true-life stories are not normally their preferred viewing because of their often difficult subject matter, but said they found Lead Children compelling.
The similarities to Chernobyl have also been noted by critics. Writing for RogerEbert.com, Clint Worthington highlighted the drama’s bleak, overcast cinematography, mud-covered period clothing and understated performances as elements that evoke the acclaimed nuclear-disaster miniseries.

Polish actress Joanna Kulig, known for Cold War, heads the cast.
She is joined by Agata Kulesza, whose credits include Ida, Kinga Preis of Silence and Michał Żurawski, known for Warsaw 44.
The ensemble also features Marian Dziędziel (The Wedding), Zbigniew Zamachowski (Treasure) and Sebastian Pawlak (The Vulture).
With its real-life inspiration, oppressive 1970s industrial setting and growing word-of-mouth from viewers, Lead Children has quickly established itself among Netflix’s most-watched titles in the UK — while its comparisons to Chernobyl are helping the historical drama attract even more attention.
