Netflix’s Death of the Pastor’s Wife Revisits the Mysterious Death of Mica Miller

When Mica Miller was found dead at a North Carolina state park on April 27, 2024, her death was initially ruled a suicide. But the circumstances surrounding her final weeks quickly drew widespread attention, particularly after details emerged about Mica’s claims that she was being targeted as part of a stalking plot.

A month before her death, Mica had told police that she was “afraid for her life.”

Mica was married to John-Paul Miller, the pastor of her family’s church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Her death and the questions surrounding the events leading up to it have continued to draw public interest.

Now, Netflix is revisiting the case with Death of the Pastor’s Wife, a new three-part documentary series that examines Mica’s final months and the search for answers that followed her death.

A closer look at Mica’s final months

Premiering August 26, Death of the Pastor’s Wife features never-before-seen footage and firsthand accounts from Mica’s friends and family members. Some of those close to her are speaking publicly about Mica and her story for the first time.

The series is directed by Julia Willoughby Nason and Mike Gasparro, whose previous projects include Murdaugh Murders and American Murder: Gabby Petito.

The executive producers are Tom Cappello, Alana Goldstein, and Keely Walker Muse of Crazy Legs Productions; Nason and Gasparro of The Cinemart; and Yotam Guendelman of Silvio Productions.

The documentary’s trailer offers an early look at the three-part series and its examination of the events surrounding Mica’s death.

The filmmakers want Mica’s voice at the center

For Nason and Gasparro, one of the most compelling parts of Mica’s story was her repeated effort to make others understand what she believed she was experiencing.

“What stayed with us about Mica’s story was how hard she seemed to be fighting to be heard,” the directors said.

Their approach focuses on Mica’s experiences while also creating space for the people who knew her best to remember her and speak about what she went through.

The filmmakers say the series is designed to confront difficult questions, revisit Mica’s own words, and keep the concerns she tried to communicate from being forgotten.

Remembering Mica beyond the case

Alana Goldstein has also stressed the deeply personal nature of the documentary.

Although she and the production team never met Mica, working closely with her family and friends gave them an impression of her warmth and personality, as well as the pain she endured.

“Our goal at Crazy Legs is to tell a deeply personal portrait of Mica — honoring her voice, uncovering the realities of emotional abuse and coercive control, and remembering her for the light she shared with the world through her faith,” Goldstein said.

The series therefore looks beyond the circumstances of Mica’s death to the people who knew her and the experiences she described in the months before she died.

Death of the Pastor’s Wife premieres on Netflix on August 26. The three-part documentary is expected to bring renewed attention to Mica Miller’s story and the questions that have continued to surround her death.
