Dolly Parton died at the age of 80 following a brief battle with cancer, her publicist has confirmed, bringing new clarity to the health struggles the country music legend had spoken about during the final months of her life.

The singer-songwriter died Tuesday, August 25, at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, surrounded by loved ones, according to her publicist Marcel Pariseau. The specific type of cancer has not been publicly disclosed.

Parton’s death came just four days after she spoke openly about experiencing “hard times” with her health while insisting she remained determined to keep working on the many projects she still hoped to complete.

In the statement confirming further details surrounding Parton’s death, Pariseau said the music legend had been facing a brief battle with cancer before dying at the Nashville medical center.

Her publicist remembered Parton not only for her extraordinary career but also for the joy, hope and generosity she brought to people throughout her life.

While cancer has now been identified as the cause of her death, no additional information has been released about the form of the disease or when she was diagnosed.

That disclosure follows months of concern surrounding Parton’s health.

The singer had previously discussed several medical difficulties without publicly revealing a cancer diagnosis. In 2025, she suffered recurring kidney stone problems that resulted in an infection, while other complications affected her immune and digestive systems.

Her health ultimately forced her to postpone and later cancel a planned Las Vegas residency.

On August 21, only four days before her death, Parton gave an update while discussing the projects she still hoped to bring to life.

She explained that she had been dealing with health problems she had not properly addressed while caring for her husband, Carl Dean, before his death in March 2025 at the age of 82.

Despite those difficulties, Parton emphasized that she was still healing and continuing to work. Her plans included Nashville’s Life of Many Colors Museum and SongTeller Hotel, alongside other business and creative projects.

Earlier in August, doctors had also advised her against traveling after she experienced dizziness and dehydration, preventing her from appearing in person for the opening of a new attraction at Dollywood.

Parton nevertheless continued working. On August 19, she accepted the ACM Honors Poet’s Award virtually and reflected on songwriting as the creative force at the center of her life.

Her determination to continue creating now gives those final appearances an especially poignant significance.

Her family announced the news

News of Parton’s death was first announced on August 25 by her nephew Bryan Seaver, who also served as her head of security.

Seaver shared the announcement in a video posted to Parton’s official social media account on behalf of the family.

Her death came roughly 17 months after the loss of Carl Dean, her husband of nearly six decades.

Parton had spoken candidly about how deeply Dean’s death affected her, describing their relationship as an enduring love story and explaining that caring for him had caused her to put some of her own health concerns aside.

According to her family, a small private funeral will be held for immediate relatives.

Tributes pour in for an American music legend

News of Parton’s death prompted an enormous wave of tributes from music, film and beyond.

Jane Fonda, who starred alongside Parton in the 1980 comedy 9 to 5, remembered her longtime friend as a powerful and generous presence whose influence would continue long after her death.

Beyoncé, who collaborated with Parton on Cowboy Carter, also paid tribute to the country legend’s individuality, artistry and generosity.

Other major figures from the entertainment world joined the remembrance as fans gathered to celebrate a performer whose appeal extended far beyond country music.

Parton’s Steel Magnolias co-stars also shared emotional memories. Julia Roberts remembered her as “magical and joyous,” while Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine and Daryl Hannah reflected on the warmth and generosity she brought to their lives.

Born January 19, 1946, in rural Tennessee, Dolly Rebecca Parton was the fourth of 12 children.

Music entered her life early. She sang in church as a child and was performing at the Grand Ole Opry by the time she was 13.

Her breakthrough eventually led to one of the most extraordinary careers in country music history.

Songs including Jolene, Coat of Many Colors, 9 to 5 and I Will Always Love You transformed Parton from a Tennessee songwriter into an international star.

Her recording career generated more than 100 million record sales worldwide and more than one billion online streams.

I Will Always Love You originally emerged from a turning point in Parton’s professional relationship with Porter Wagoner. Almost two decades later, Whitney Houston’s recording for the 1992 film The Bodyguard introduced the song to another generation and became a global phenomenon.

Parton also became a major screen presence through films including 9 to 5, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and Steel Magnolias.

A legacy extending far beyond music

Parton’s influence was never confined to entertainment.

Her business ventures included Dollywood, which became one of Tennessee’s best-known tourist attractions, while her philanthropic work touched millions of families.

Among her most enduring achievements was Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, the literacy program created to provide free books to children.

She also supported numerous charitable initiatives throughout her career and famously donated $1 million to research at Vanderbilt University during the COVID-19 pandemic, helping support work connected with Moderna’s vaccine.

Her combination of songwriting, business success and philanthropy made her one of the rare entertainers whose influence stretched across generations and cultural boundaries.

Dolly kept looking forward until the end

Perhaps one of the most striking details surrounding Parton’s final days is how firmly she remained focused on the future.

Even while her health deteriorated, she continued developing new projects and discussing ambitions she still wanted to fulfill.

People close to Parton have said her Christian faith remained central to that optimism. She had long spoken about mortality without treating death as an ending, instead viewing her life and creative work through the lens of faith.

Only days before her death, she was still talking about healing, working and bringing more dreams to life.

Dolly Parton died at 80 after a brief battle with cancer, but the extraordinary catalogue of songs, stories and charitable work she leaves behind ensures that the influence of the girl from the Tennessee mountains will continue far beyond her lifetime.
