Nicola Walker’s Alice and Steve Is Returning for Season Two
Nicola Walker and Jemaine Clement’s unconventional Disney+ comedy-drama Alice and Steve is officially coming back for a second season, following a first series that divided critics but won plenty of fans.
The renewal was announced by Disney+ on August 26, 2026. The series, created and written by Sophie Goodhart, stars Walker as Alice and Clement as Steve, longtime friends whose 30-year friendship is thrown into chaos when Steve begins dating Alice’s 26-year-old daughter, Izzy.
Disney+ has not yet announced a release date for season two, and plot details remain closely guarded. Goodhart has, however, offered one tantalising hint about what lies ahead.
“No one will be prepared for what happens next.”
That promise follows a first season that ended on a major cliffhanger, leaving Alice and Steve’s already fractured relationship in an uncertain place.
What could happen in Alice and Steve season two?
The first season centred on Alice’s increasingly desperate attempts to deal with Steve’s relationship with Izzy.
For Alice, the situation threatened two of the most important relationships in her life at once. She feared losing her best friend of three decades while also facing the possibility that her relationship with her daughter would never be the same.
Steve, meanwhile, was determined to pursue his relationship with Izzy despite Alice’s objections. Her efforts to break the couple apart ultimately escalated into a bitter feud between the two longtime friends.
The six-part first season built steadily towards a dramatic cliffhanger, leaving the consequences of their actions unresolved.
For now, Disney+ is keeping the story of season two secret. Lee Mason, VP, Scripted, Disney+ EMEA, has said viewers should expect more “laughs, betrayal, and bad decisions.”
That gives a broad indication of the tone, but little away about exactly where the story will go next.
Who will return for season two?
Disney+ has confirmed that the series is returning with its principal cast, including Nicola Walker, Jemaine Clement, Yali Topol Margalith and Joel Fry.
Walker is expected to return as Alice, with Clement reprising his role as Steve. Yali Topol Margalith plays Izzy, while Joel Fry stars as Alice’s husband, Daniel.
The four actors formed the central ensemble of the first season, which Disney+ describes as a comedy series produced by Clerkenwell Films.
Walker previously explained why the role appealed to her. Speaking to HELLO! earlier in 2026, she said she had enjoyed the women she had played throughout her career but felt Alice offered something different.
The writing was another major attraction. Walker described it as “so incredibly good” and said accepting the part was effectively a “no-brainer.”
That decision gave the Unforgotten star the chance to play a character very different from some of her better-known dramatic roles.
What is Alice and Steve about?
At the centre of the series is Alice, a woman in her 50s whose close friendship with Steve is suddenly transformed when he becomes romantically involved with her daughter.
Izzy is 26, and Steve has known her for much of her life. The relationship immediately creates an uncomfortable situation for Alice and becomes the catalyst for the breakdown of her friendship with Steve.
The series explores the fallout through comedy and drama, following the pair as their once-solid friendship deteriorates into increasingly hostile behaviour.
The show was created by Sophie Goodhart, who has previously worked on Sex Education, and directed by Tom Kingsley. The cast also includes Tyrese Eaton-Dyce, Eilidh Fisher, Ken Blackburn, Lydia Wilson and others.
Season one premiered on Disney+ in the UK and Ireland on June 8, 2026, with the series also available on Hulu in the US.
Viewers and critics were divided
Alice and Steve has attracted a noticeably mixed response, although audiences have generally been more positive than some critics.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the first season currently holds a 71% Tomatometer score from 31 reviews, while the audience score stands at 81%.
Critics were particularly divided over the show’s central premise. The Guardian gave the series two stars, describing its comedy as “dated and wrong,” while The Telegraph also awarded two stars and argued that the central relationship was too uncomfortable to overlook.
Other outlets were considerably warmer. RadioTimes.com gave the series four stars and praised its combination of poignancy and humour, while HELLO! highlighted Walker’s performance and called the series binge-worthy.
The broader critical picture is mixed but leans positive. Metacritic currently gives season one a score of 66 based on 15 critic reviews, with 73% of those reviews classified as positive.
Walker has also emerged as one of the show’s biggest strengths. The Los Angeles Times praised her performance as Alice, while other reviews similarly singled out the intensity she brings to the character.
Among viewers, the reaction has included strong praise, with fans describing the series as “phenomenal” and a “brilliant” dark comedy.
When will Alice and Steve season two be released?
There is currently no confirmed release date for season two.
What is known is that Disney+ has officially renewed the series, with Sophie Goodhart returning to continue the story of Alice, Steve and Izzy.
Until more details are revealed, the biggest question is how the events of the first season’s cliffhanger will affect the three central characters and whether Alice and Steve’s friendship can survive everything that has happened between them.
