Could Prince William and Prince Harry Finally Reconcile? The Two Brothers Who May Hold the Key to Ending Their Six-Year Rift
For six years, Prince William and Prince Harry have remained deeply divided, with time and distance doing little to repair their fractured relationship.
But now that Harry has returned to Britain for an extended stay, attention is turning to two people who have known both princes since childhood — brothers Thomas and Charlie van Straubenzee.
The pair are among the few people with unusually close connections to both sides of the royal family. Thomas, 44, is one of Prince William’s oldest and closest friends, while his younger brother Charlie, 38, has remained particularly close to Harry.
Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams believes that this unique relationship could make the van Straubenzee brothers the most obvious potential mediators between the two princes.
“The van Straubenzee brothers could pull off the most extraordinary feat if they joined forces to bring William and Harry together,” Fitzwilliams told the Daily Mail.
Two brothers at the heart of William and Harry’s lives
Thomas and Charlie have known William and Harry since their school days at Ludgrove Prep School. Their friendship has survived marriages, children and the enormous changes that have transformed the royal brothers’ relationship.
The van Straubenzee family became something of a second family to William and Harry during their childhood.
Their parents, Claire and Alex, provided the young princes with a place to escape to during the difficult period surrounding Charles and Diana’s separation. William and Harry also regularly spent summer holidays with the family in Cornwall.
That history gives Thomas and Charlie something few others possess: decades of personal knowledge of both brothers.
Thomas is particularly close to William and has long been regarded as one of the future King’s best friends. Charlie, meanwhile, has remained a trusted confidant of Harry, even after the Duke moved to California.
The two friendships have also been intertwined with major royal occasions.
Thomas acted as an usher at Harry and Meghan Markle’s 2018 wedding, while Charlie also played a prominent role during the celebrations. Charlie later visited Harry in Montecito in 2022, with the pair photographed riding bicycles together around the California neighborhood.
Their ties to the royal children run even deeper
The connections between the families extend to the next generation.
Thomas is godfather to Princess Charlotte, while William is godfather to Thomas’s daughter Mary.
Harry is godfather to Charlie’s daughter Clover, and Charlie is godfather to Prince Archie.
The brothers have therefore remained connected to both sides of the royal family even as William and Harry themselves have grown increasingly distant.
Thomas was also once extremely close to Harry. In his memoir Spare, Harry recalled their friendship, including the time Thomas was mugged in London in 2012 and called Harry after his phone was stolen.
Henry’s memory remains another powerful link
The van Straubenzee family’s connection to Harry and William also carries a deeply emotional history.
Their brother Henry became particularly close to Harry during their school years. Harry later described Henry affectionately in Spare and recalled how he was one of the few people who asked about Diana after her death in 1997.
Henry tragically died in a car crash at just 18.
His death had a profound impact on Harry, who compared receiving the news to the devastating moment when his father told him that Princess Diana had died.
The bond between the royal brothers and the van Straubenzee family was so strong that William and Harry shared a patronage of the Henry van Straubenzee Memorial Fund. Even after their relationship had deteriorated, the brothers signed a joint letter commemorating the 20th anniversary of Henry’s death in December 2022.
Harry’s return to Britain could change the situation
Harry and Meghan have now returned to Britain with their children after six years in the United States.
The Sussexes are expected to live in a private residence outside London, while Archie and Lilibet are understood to have been enrolled in British schools.
Their return means Harry is once again physically closer to many of the people from his former life — including friends who also maintain strong relationships with William.
The Duke of Westminster Hugh Grosvenor, Guy Pelly and royal equerry Mark Dyer are among Harry’s longtime friends who also have links to William.
But Fitzwilliams believes Thomas and Charlie van Straubenzee stand apart because of the depth of their individual relationships with the two brothers.
Thomas is especially close to William, while Charlie is especially close to Harry.
That makes them uniquely positioned to understand both sides of a dispute that has lasted years.
A reconciliation remains far from guaranteed
Despite the possibility of mediation, there is no indication that William and Harry are suddenly on the verge of repairing their relationship.
The brothers have remained estranged for years, with their relationship badly damaged by the events surrounding Harry and Meghan’s departure as working royals in 2020, as well as subsequent interviews and Harry’s memoir.
Friends of William have previously indicated that the Prince of Wales and those close to him have struggled to forgive the public criticisms made by the Sussexes.
Harry, for his part, has previously expressed a desire to end the conflict.
Speaking to the BBC last year, he said: “There’s no point in continuing to fight any more.”
Whether that sentiment can eventually translate into a meaningful reconciliation remains unclear.
Could Diana bring the brothers together?
Another potential moment of significance is approaching.
William and Harry remain patrons of The Diana Award, the charity established in memory of their mother and dedicated to celebrating young people who make a difference.
A black-tie event connected to the charity is expected to take place at the OWO Hotel in central London on September 18, although the charity has not confirmed the attendance of either prince.
The event comes as preparations begin for the 30th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death next summer.
William and Harry have continued to support the charity separately in recent years, taking turns to participate in its events.
For now, there is no confirmed sign that the brothers will appear together.
But with Harry now back in Britain, their shared friends once again have an opportunity that was far more difficult when the Sussexes were living thousands of miles away in California.
And if anyone could potentially bridge the enormous distance between the two princes, royal watchers believe Thomas and Charlie van Straubenzee may be among the very few with the history, trust and connections to even attempt it.
