The Cosy Crime Hit Fans Can’t Stop Watching Returns With Its Darkest Mysteries Yet

It looks like the perfect English town — beautiful riverside scenery, charming locals and a community where everyone seems to know everyone.

But in The Marlow Murder Club, that picture-perfect setting has one rather unfortunate problem: people keep turning up dead.

The hit cosy-crime drama returns to US television for its third season on September 6, bringing Samantha Bond back as retired archaeologist-turned-amateur detective Judith Potts alongside Cara Horgan and Jo Martin.

Created by Death in Paradise mastermind Robert Thorogood and adapted from his bestselling novels, the series has become a favourite among viewers who love their murder mysteries with plenty of charm, wit and beautiful scenery.

And there is a very good reason for that.

A modern Miss Marple in the heart of Marlow

At the centre of the series is Judith Potts, an unlikely sleuth whose retirement has taken an unexpectedly dangerous turn.

Together with vicar’s wife Becks Starling and dog walker Suzie Harris, Judith forms an unconventional detective trio determined to investigate the murders that leave the peaceful Buckinghamshire town of Marlow anything but peaceful.

The concept was inspired by one of crime fiction’s most famous amateur detectives.

Thorogood previously explained that after creating Death in Paradise as his take on a Hercule Poirot-style mystery, he wanted to create his own version of Miss Marple.

“I wanted to do what would be my Miss Marple,” he told RadioTimes.com, explaining that he has always loved writing stories in the Agatha Christie tradition.

That influence is unmistakable — but The Marlow Murder Club gives the formula its own modern personality.

Season three brings a fresh batch of murders

By the third season, Judith, Becks and Suzie have become established members of newly promoted DI Tanika Malik’s crime-solving team.

Their latest cases, however, are anything but straightforward.

The season begins with the sudden death of Marlow’s beloved mayor — a man regarded by the community as the nicest person in town.

Then comes another shocking case involving a celebrity chef who is found dead during the launch of his cookbook, with half the town present.

The trio are also called to an eerie manor house for a university reunion, where the investigation takes an unexpected turn when Becks finds herself among the suspects.

Suddenly, the women’s position as civilian advisers could be at risk.

Big guest stars join the mystery

The new season also features an impressive collection of guest stars.

Peter Davison, Tony Gardner and comedy legend Harry Enfield are among the familiar faces joining the cast, adding another layer of intrigue to the latest collection of cases.

But it is the chemistry between Bond, Horgan and Martin that remains at the heart of the show.

The three women may have very different personalities and approaches to solving crime, but together they have become an unexpectedly effective detective team.

Season four is already confirmed

Fans do not have to worry about this being the end.

The series was renewed for a fourth season in June, with six new episodes scheduled to arrive in 2027.

The next chapter will begin with a body discovered in the river, a death that is eventually linked to the Marlow Amateur Dramatics Society and a homegrown Hollywood star.

There will also be a mysterious death at a mother’s wake, where an apparent allergic reaction may conceal something far more sinister.

And then comes perhaps the strangest case of all: the co-owner of a vineyard is found drowned in his own wine.

Family scandals, personal betrayals and hidden motives will once again put Judith, Becks and Suzie to work.
