Prince Harry’s return to Britain with Meghan Markle and their two children has sparked fresh speculation over what may have brought the Duke of Sussex back to the country after six years in California.

The Sussexes surprised royal watchers in August when they relocated to the UK with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. The family is now living in a privately rented home, while Archie and Lilibet have been enrolled at a British school.

Although the move is not necessarily expected to be permanent, the family intends to remain in Britain for the time being.

The reasons behind the decision, however, have remained unclear.

One theory previously suggested that Meghan Markle may have secured a UK-based acting opportunity. But a new claim has shifted attention back to Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana.

Could Princess Diana be behind Harry’s return?

According to one royal expert, Harry’s decision to establish a base in Britain could be connected to his interest in creating a television film about Princess Diana.

The claim adds another possible explanation to a move that has already generated considerable discussion.

Harry has maintained a strong public connection to his mother’s memory throughout his adult life, and his experiences following Diana’s death have remained an important part of his story.

The Duke was just 12 when Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris in 1997. Her death, and the way he experienced its aftermath, have featured prominently in Harry’s public reflections about his childhood and his relationship with the Royal Family.

A Diana-focused television project, if pursued, could therefore provide a possible reason for Harry to spend more time in the UK.

However, the suggestion remains a claim rather than a confirmed explanation for the Sussexes’ relocation.

A new life back in Britain

Harry and Meghan’s return comes after years of building an independent life in Montecito, California.

Since stepping away from royal duties and moving to the United States, the couple have developed a series of projects and business ventures outside the institution of the monarchy.

Their latest decision represents a significant change in circumstances.

Rather than living thousands of miles away from Britain, Harry is now once again based within much closer reach of his family and the country where he was born and raised.

The couple are also returning with Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, who are preparing to begin life at a British school.

Their children’s education, Harry’s desire to spend more time with his family and the possibility of pursuing projects in Britain have all been raised as potential factors.

Harry has also previously indicated that he wanted to make more frequent visits to the UK following his recent reunion with King Charles.

Sources close to the Duke previously said he wanted to visit Britain “every few months” over the following year. Harry has also described his most recent time with his father as leaving him feeling “buoyed”, “very happy” and “really energised”.

He was already scheduled to return to Britain in September for a week of engagements.

A closer connection to his past

For Harry, returning to Britain could mean more than simply changing his family’s address.

Much of his public identity remains intertwined with the Royal Family and, above all, with the legacy of Princess Diana.

The suggestion that he could be considering a television film about his mother gives another possible dimension to his decision to spend more time in the UK.

For now, the Sussexes remain private citizens and non-working members of the Royal Family, in keeping with their previously expressed wishes and the arrangements reached in recent years.

Whether their new British base becomes a long-term home remains uncertain.
