The 1% Club contestant cracks “impossible” final puzzle to win £97,000

A sequence of five clock times looked almost meaningless — until one contestant realised it was hiding a five-letter word worth £97,000.

On the latest episode of ITV’s The 1% Club, Zoe and Ryan made it through a tense series of increasingly difficult challenges to reach the show’s final question. What awaited them appeared deceptively simple: five clocks displaying different times and a single question asking them to identify the word represented by the sequence.

The answer required no specialist knowledge. Instead, it came down to recognising a connection between numbers and the alphabet.

A quiz that tests logic, not general knowledge

Hosted by Lee Mack, The 1% Club takes a different approach from traditional quiz shows. Rather than relying heavily on facts and general knowledge, contestants are challenged to use logic, observation and critical thinking.

There are 15 questions, with each one becoming progressively harder. The final challenge is designed to be solved by only around 1% of the public.

The latest episode, which aired on Saturday, March 7, began with 100 contestants competing for a share of a prize pot worth up to £100,000.

One question proved particularly brutal, eliminating a record 25 contestants at once. By the time the game reached its decisive final stage, only Zoe and Ryan remained.

Then came the question that would determine who took home the remaining jackpot.

Five clocks, five numbers — but what do they mean?

Zoe and Ryan were shown five different clocks.

Reading from left to right, they displayed:

12, 1, 2, 5 and 12.

The clocks themselves appeared in different styles, including alarm clocks, a digital clock and traditional analogue clocks.

The question was:

“What word is represented by the times on the clocks below?”

At first glance, there seemed to be little connection between the five numbers.

But there was a crucial clue hidden in their order. Together, the numbers represented the positions of letters in the alphabet.

With the countdown underway, Ryan was unable to work out the answer in time and failed to submit one.

That left Zoe with the final opportunity to solve the puzzle.

The £97,000 answer

Zoe managed to spot the pattern.

The answer was “LABEL.”

The sequence worked by matching each number with the corresponding letter in the alphabet:

• 12 = L
• 1 = A
• 2 = B
• 5 = E
• 12 = L

Put together, 12-1-2-5-12 spells LABEL.

What initially looked like five unrelated clock times was actually a straightforward alphabet code.

Zoe’s answer was confirmed as correct, securing her the £97,000 jackpot and making her the only finalist to win the main prize.

The remaining £3,000 went to contestants who had previously chosen to leave the game rather than risk walking away empty-handed.

Viewers were stumped too

Ryan was far from the only person who struggled with the final puzzle.

After the episode aired, several viewers took to social media to admit they had also failed to see the connection.

One viewer wrote that they had never worked it out but praised Zoe for getting the answer. Another asked how the clocks could possibly represent “Label”, while a third described the solution as an example of “really lateral thinking.”

The reaction highlighted exactly what makes The 1% Club so challenging: sometimes the hardest questions are the ones that appear to require almost nothing more than common sense.
