Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s return to Britain has already triggered endless speculation about their new life — but one commentator has offered a particularly pointed theory about why they chose the Cotswolds.

After six years living in California, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are reportedly settling in the English countryside with their two children.

Their choice of location has attracted plenty of attention, with questions surrounding everything from family life to privacy and security.

But journalist Neil Sea believes there could be another motivation behind the move — Meghan’s familiarity with the area and its wealthy, influential social scene.

Speaking in a video shared on YouTube, Sea discussed the type of community found across the Cotswolds and suggested the area has become a magnet for celebrities, media figures and other influential names.

“A lot of people ask me why the Cotswolds,” he said.

According to Sea, Meghan already knew the area to some extent because of her previous visits to Soho House properties.

He described the Cotswolds as a place where many “movers and shakers” choose to live, while also criticising what he considered the area’s pretentious reputation.

Sea compared its celebrity appeal with that of the Hamptons, claiming that the presence of high-profile residents can also attract media attention.

He then made his most pointed claim, suggesting Meghan “wanted to be in that set.”

“That’s why Harry had to agree to the Cotswolds,” he added.

The remarks are Sea’s own theory, rather than an explanation confirmed by Harry or Meghan.

Privacy May Be The Bigger Consideration

There is, however, another side to the decision — and it is considerably more practical.

Security has reportedly been a major consideration for Harry and Meghan as they looked for a new UK home.

Given the couple’s exceptionally high level of public attention, choosing a property would involve far more than finding an attractive country house.

Saif Derzi, founder of Property Buyers Today, explained that the family would need to consider whether a property could be properly secured and whether their movements could be easily observed or predicted.

“For a family with their level of public attention, it isn’t just about how impressive a property looks,” he said.

The ability to create genuine privacy could therefore be crucial.

The Cotswolds Offers Something California Couldn’t

Derzi suggested that privacy would likely be among Harry and Meghan’s most important priorities when selecting a property in the area.

They would need somewhere offering substantial seclusion, strong security potential and enough space for their children to experience a sense of normal family life.

That makes the Cotswolds an intriguing choice.

On one hand, Sea has suggested the area’s social scene and connections could have appealed to Meghan.

On the other, its rural setting potentially offers the very thing the Sussexes have repeatedly emphasised since leaving royal duties: distance from the constant intensity of public life.

For Harry and Meghan, the move therefore represents more than simply a change of address.

It puts them back in Britain while allowing them to build a family life away from central London — close enough to the world they left behind, but far enough away to create a different kind of existence.
