Five Episodes. One Night. Zero Reason To Stop Halfway… Harlan Coben’s Overlooked Netflix Thr*ller May Have Slipped Past Most Viewers, But Its Twisted Mystery Makes It The Perfect Binge To Start And Finish Before Bed

Harlan Coben has become one of Netflix’s most reliable names for twist-heavy thrillers, but one of his shorter adaptations may also be among his most emotional.

Missing You runs for just five episodes, making it even more compact than many of Coben’s other Netflix mysteries. Yet it still manages to squeeze in a vanished fiancé, a detective haunted by her father’s death, an unusual dating app and the kind of revelations that can completely change the direction of the story.

Coben himself described it as a “little tighter” than many of his previous adaptations.

More surprisingly, he said watching its final episode actually made him cry.

A dating-app match Kat never expected to see

Jessica Plummer and Rosalind Eleazar in Missing You

The central mystery begins with Detective Inspector Kat Donovan, played by Rosalind Eleazar.

Kat joins a dating app called Melody Cupid, which takes a distinctive approach to matchmaking. Rather than relying solely on conventional profiles, it connects users through their musical tastes, allowing them to “harmonize with” or “mute” potential matches.

Then Kat sees a face she knows immediately.

Josh, played by Ashley Walters, is her former fiancé.

The problem is that Josh disappeared from her life years earlier.

Seeing him unexpectedly appear on a dating app therefore opens questions Kat cannot simply ignore.

For a detective accustomed to searching for answers, the discovery becomes deeply personal.

This was never an ordinary breakup

Coben’s thrillers frequently begin by disrupting apparently familiar relationships.

Stay Close explores the consequences of discovering unsettling secrets about someone close to you, while his other mysteries similarly use families, marriages and relationships as gateways into much darker stories.

Missing You approaches that territory through Kat’s unresolved past.

She has experienced the pain of losing someone she loved, but Josh’s disappearance left her without the kind of closure that normally follows the end of a relationship.

Now he has suddenly resurfaced in the most unexpected way.

That makes the mystery more than a question of where Josh has been.

Kat also has to confront everything his disappearance left behind.

Josh is not the only unresolved part of Kat’s past.

She is also still dealing with questions surrounding the death of her father, Clint Donovan, played by Lenny Henry.

That second storyline quickly becomes important, giving Kat two intensely personal mysteries to confront.

The series does not spend several episodes slowly moving its pieces into position either.

A considerable amount happens during the opening installment, culminating in a major twist that pushes the story forward.

With only five episodes available, Missing You has little room for filler.

Harlan Coben deliberately wanted a tighter story

That shorter format was something Coben himself highlighted before the series arrived.

Speaking at a panel in 2024, he compared Missing You with several of his other adaptations.

“This is five episodes. Most of the (shows) we’ve done are eight,” he said. “So it’s a little tighter story.”

That difference is noticeable.

Rather than spreading the mystery across eight installments, the series keeps Kat, Josh and Clint at the center while continuing to add complications around them.

It is a format particularly well suited to Coben’s storytelling style, where one revelation frequently creates another question almost immediately.

Coben called it his ‘most emotional series’

But the author’s strongest comments were not about the twists.

They were about the ending.

Coben said he had a small emotional reaction to Fool Me Once, but Missing You affected him considerably more.

“When I watched episode five, I actually cried,” he said.

He went on to describe it as potentially “our most emotional series.”

That distinction is important because Coben is so closely associated with cliffhangers and dramatic reveals.

The appeal of Missing You is not simply discovering the next twist.

Kat’s story is also about loss, unresolved relationships and the difficulty of deciding whether to keep searching backward or finally move forward.

Coben knows audiences expect him to trick them

The author has been open about his love of manipulating expectations.

In a 2026 interview with Reader’s Digest, Coben described himself as a “twists-and-turns guy” who enjoys making audiences guess.

But he also offered an interesting explanation of why the reveal itself is not always the most important part.

“It’s not necessarily about the cliff-hanger — it’s about the other side of that cliff-hanger,” he said.

Missing You fits that philosophy particularly well.

The opening discovery involving Josh is compelling because of what it means for Kat.

Every answer has the potential to force her to reconsider something about her own history.

A familiar Harlan Coben face returns

Coben regular Richard Armitage also appears in the series as Detective Chief Inspector Ellis Stagger.

Netflix viewers familiar with the author’s previous adaptations will almost certainly recognize him.

Armitage played Adam Price in The Stranger, Ray Levine in Stay Close and Joe Burkett in Fool Me Once.

His appearance gives Missing You another connection to Netflix’s growing collection of Coben adaptations, although the story remains firmly centered on Kat.

Rosalind Eleazar carries much of the emotional weight as a woman simultaneously investigating mysteries and dealing with upheaval in her personal life.

The unusual premise gives the mystery its hook

There is something immediately unsettling about discovering a person who vanished from your life suddenly appearing on a dating app.

That simple idea gives Missing You an effective starting point before the larger mystery begins unfolding.

Kat wants to know what happened.

She also has the skills of a detective.

And the further she searches, the more complicated the situation becomes.

Add the unresolved questions surrounding her father and the series quickly becomes about far more than an unexpected online match.

Five episodes, one tightly wound mystery

For viewers who enjoy Coben’s Netflix adaptations but do not want another eight-part commitment, Missing You offers a particularly compact alternative.

Its five episodes combine a personal mystery with a police investigation while keeping Kat’s emotional journey at the center.

There are twists, secrets and cliffhangers — exactly what audiences have come to expect from Coben.

But the author’s own reaction suggests the destination matters just as much as the surprises along the way.

And with the upcoming Myron Bolitar adaptation still without a confirmed release date, Missing You offers a much quicker Coben fix in the meantime.

All five episodes of Missing You are available to stream on Netflix.
