Buckingham Palace Marks 9/11 Anniversary With Emotional Changing Of The Guard — And A Powerful Royal Tribute Returns

The sound of the American national anthem echoed across Buckingham Palace on Friday morning as Britain marked 25 years since the September 11 attacks with an unusually moving Changing of the Guard ceremony.

Under bright sunshine on the Palace’s famous red gravel forecourt, the Band of the Coldstream Guards performed both the British and American national anthems in a commemorative display of solidarity between the two nations.

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester represented King Charles at the ceremony, taking the Royal Salute beneath the Palace’s central arch alongside US Ambassador Warren Stephens and his wife Harriet, Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, Security Minister Dan Jarvis and around 40 invited British and American guests.

BRITAIN-ROYALS

A Changing Of The Guard With A Deeper Meaning

The Guards arrived from St James’s Palace, marching down The Mall in their distinctive scarlet tunics and towering bearskin hats before reaching Buckingham Palace.

They performed The Thunderer and The Stars and Stripes Forever, two well-known American military marches, as they prepared to replace the outgoing Irish Guards.

But the ceremony carried a significance far beyond its traditional pageantry.

The band also played Hymn to the Fallen, from the American war film Saving Private Ryan, followed by Amazing Grace.

As the hymn began, thousands of people gathered outside the Palace gates joined in.

When the final notes faded, the crowd erupted into applause and cheers before the royal party returned inside.

The invited guests remained outside for another 40 minutes as the formal Changing of the Guard ceremony continued.

The Royal Gesture That Followed 9/11

9/11 25th anniversary

The ceremony echoed an extraordinary decision made by the late Queen Elizabeth II in the immediate aftermath of the attacks.

Just two days after September 11, 2001, the Queen instructed the Guards to play the US National Anthem during the Changing of the Guard as a public expression of Britain’s solidarity with America.

It was a historic gesture.

The anthem had never previously been played as part of the ceremony for another nation. Normally, foreign anthems would only be heard during ceremonial occasions involving visiting foreign leaders.

Against the backdrop of the attacks, however, the Queen chose to make an unmistakable statement of support.

Twenty-five years later, that symbolism remains powerful.

Remembering The British Victims

Earlier on Friday, Ambassador Stephens and his wife had also paid their respects at the 9/11 Memorial Garden in Grosvenor Square.

The ambassador highlighted the 67 British citizens who were among those killed in the attacks.

“Hard to believe” 25 years had passed, he said, while acknowledging that what happened remained difficult to comprehend.

He described September 11 as a tragedy that would never be forgotten.

The commemoration therefore carried a distinctly British dimension as well as an American one, remembering those from both nations whose lives were changed forever.

Charles And Camilla’s Own 9/11 Tribute

The Royal Family has continued to honour the victims of September 11 over the years.

Earlier this year, during their state visit to the United States, King Charles and Queen Camilla laid flowers at the September 11 Memorial in New York and met relatives of people who died in the attacks.

Last month, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester also represented the King at the inaugural National Day for Victims and Survivors of Terrorism at Lancaster House.

Friday’s Changing of the Guard therefore formed part of a much longer royal tradition of remembrance.

For a ceremony normally associated with military precision, changing sentries and Buckingham Palace pageantry, the anniversary gave it a deeply personal meaning.

As the Guards played the American anthem and thousands joined together in Amazing Grace, a familiar London tradition became a moment of remembrance shared between two countries still carrying the memory of September 11.

And 25 years after Queen Elizabeth II first ordered that anthem to be heard outside Buckingham Palace, the message behind the gesture remains just as clear: some moments in history are never truly left behind.
