For four years, Prince William had something remarkably rare in his life — the chance to disappear into an ordinary student crowd.

Long before he became the Prince of Wales and one of the most recognisable men in Britain, William was studying at St Andrews University, where he reportedly went by a surprisingly ordinary name as he tried to enjoy a little freedom from royal life.

The future King is thought to have used the nickname “Steve”, giving him an extra layer of anonymity as he completed his degree in Geography.

William’s Attempt To Escape The Spotlight

William arrived at St Andrews in 2001 and initially enrolled to study Art History before switching to Geography. He graduated in June 2005.

It was also at the Scottish university that he met Catherine, who was studying there at the same time and would eventually become his wife.

Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond previously told The Mirror that the Prince is “almost obsessive” about protecting the privacy of his children and is “much more a protective husband and dad than a King in waiting”.

Bond suggested his approach was partly shaped by his own childhood, particularly the instability surrounding his parents.

“After a childhood spent shuffling between the homes of his quarrelling parents, William is determined to give his family the stability he missed,” she said.

She also highlighted the importance of the privacy available to William, Catherine and their three children at their Windsor home, suggesting that a settled family environment matters deeply to the future King.

The couple have since moved from Adelaide Cottage to Forest Lodge, an eight-bedroom property in Windsor.
