Prince Harry is preparing to cross the Atlantic once again, just weeks after returning to Britain with Meghan Markle and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

The Duke of Sussex is scheduled to attend the Clinton Global Initiative’s annual meeting in New York on September 22 and 23. The event, hosted by Bill and Hillary Clinton, will mark Harry’s second appearance at the gathering after he took part in 2024.

The trip comes shortly after the Sussexes relocated to the UK following six years in California — and at a time when renewed questions are being raised about Harry and Meghan’s place in relation to the Royal Family.

Meghan and the children are not currently expected to accompany Harry to New York, meaning the Duke could make the trip alone.

Harry’s Return to America Comes Weeks After the Family’s UK Move

Harry and Meghan stepped back from their roles as senior working royals in 2020 before settling in the United States. They eventually made Montecito, California, their home, where they raised Archie and Lilibet.

Their decision to return to Britain in August marked a significant change for the family. The couple had been living in the US for six years before relocating with their children, who are now expected to begin school in the UK.

Harry’s upcoming New York appearance, however, shows that his connection to the United States remains strong.

The Clinton Global Initiative brings together leaders from business, government and civil society to address major global challenges. This year’s meeting will focus on issues including artificial intelligence, climate and energy resilience, democracy, humanitarian response, economic opportunity and health.

Harry has already appeared at the initiative once before. During the 2024 gathering, he discussed concerns about the potential impact of social media on young people.

It remains unclear whether he will give a speech or participate in a formal discussion during this year’s meeting.

Harry’s New York trip will come at the end of an unusually busy period of public engagements following his return to Britain.

He is due to attend the inaugural Invictus Spirit Awards on September 17 before appearing at the WellChild Awards in London on September 21. WellChild has confirmed that Harry, who has served as the charity’s patron for 18 years, will attend the ceremony, meet winners and their families, present an award and deliver a speech.

Just one day later, he is expected in New York for the Clinton Global Initiative.

The tightly packed schedule means Harry could move from a major charity event in London to an international gathering in the US within a matter of hours.

Why Harry’s US Trip Is Drawing Attention

The timing is particularly notable because Harry and Meghan’s return to Britain has already been followed by fresh clarification from Buckingham Palace about their position within the Royal Family.

On September 7, King Charles III authorized the release of a letter from the Lord Chamberlain confirming that Harry and Meghan remain non-working members of the Royal Family despite their return to the UK.

The letter reiterated that they cannot use the HRH styles and that their charitable activities are undertaken in a private capacity. It also described their position as being akin to that of private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.

The clarification was issued after the couple returned to Britain, with the Palace saying it was intended to prevent confusion over their status and how they should be treated by government, military and other official bodies.

Reports have indicated that Harry and Meghan were unhappy with the way the announcement was handled, while people close to the couple have emphasized their continuing status as prominent public figures.

The Palace, however, has maintained that the letter simply reaffirmed arrangements that have been in place since the Sussexes stepped away from royal duties.

Uganda’s Invictus Withdrawal Adds to the Tension

The controversy was followed by another unexpected development involving Harry’s Invictus Games.

Uganda announced that it was withdrawing from the 2027 Invictus Games only weeks after becoming the 26th nation to join the event. General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s chief of defence forces, said the country did not want its participation to be interpreted as opposition to King Charles and stated that Uganda would not take part in anything without the monarch’s approval.

The decision came shortly after the Palace letter, prompting speculation about whether the two developments were connected.

A source close to Harry reportedly linked Uganda’s withdrawal directly to the Palace guidance, while the precise circumstances behind the decision remain disputed. There has been no indication that King Charles personally opposes the Invictus Games or Harry’s work supporting wounded and injured service personnel.

The development nevertheless adds another layer of difficulty to Harry’s return to public life in Britain.
