Yellowstone Meets Virgin River Sounded Like The Perfect Netflix Formula… This Hallmark-Style Neo-Western Mixed Romance, Ranch Life And Family Drama Into One Addictive Escape — But Now Fans Have Been Hit With The Update Nobody Wanted

Netflix Reportedly Cancels ‘Ransom Canyon’ After Two Seasons As Fans Say The Streamer Has Made A ‘Big Mistake’

Fans hoping for another trip to Texas Hill Country may have received the news they were dreading.

Netflix has reportedly cancelled Ransom Canyon after two seasons, bringing the Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly Western romance to an apparent end just weeks after its second season arrived.

According to Deadline, the series will not return for Season 3, despite viewers hoping its combination of romance, family drama and sweeping Western scenery would continue.

The reported decision comes only around a month and a half after Season 2’s release — and some fans have already taken to social media to tell Netflix exactly how they feel.

“I can’t believe Netflix cancelled my fav show!” one viewer wrote.

Another was even more direct: “Netflix made a big mistake.”

There is, however, one important caveat: Netflix has not yet publicly confirmed the cancellation.

‘Ransom Canyon’ Reportedly Won’t Get A Third Season

Based on Jodi Thomas’ bestselling series of novels, Ransom Canyon was designed as a romantic ensemble drama set against the landscapes of Texas Hill Country.

Netflix described the show as a “heartfelt drama set against the sweeping vistas of Texas Hill Country.”

Its story follows several deeply established families whose lives overlap in a close-knit community where privacy can be difficult to maintain.

As Netflix summarized it: “Ransom Canyon follows the intersecting lives of deep-rooted families in a town where your neighbors know everyone’s business.”

At the center of the adaptation were Duhamel, known for All My Children, and Friday Night Lights star Kelly.

Their presence helped establish a series that blended Western imagery with the kind of relationship-driven storytelling associated with Netflix comfort dramas.

‘Yellowstone’ Meets ‘Virgin River’

A woman holds a man's face as their foreheads touch

From the beginning, Ransom Canyon invited comparisons with some enormously popular television franchises.

Its ranching backdrop and Western atmosphere naturally led to comparisons with Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone.

But its romantic relationships, small-town conflicts and interconnected families also put it closer in tone to Netflix dramas such as Virgin River and Sweet Magnolias.

That combination gave the show a distinctive position.

It offered horses, ranches and wide-open landscapes without becoming a straightforward neo-Western, while delivering the romantic melodrama and community relationships that have made other Netflix series reliable comfort viewing.

However, Ransom Canyon never managed to reach the same level of success as some of those shows.

Season 1 Received A Mixed Critical Response

The warning signs were visible after the first season.

Season 1 currently holds a 49% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, reflecting a relatively muted reception.

Its future was initially uncertain.

Netflix eventually decided to continue the series, but Season 2 arrived with a smaller episode order.

While the first season consisted of 10 episodes, the second was reduced to eight.

That renewal gave the drama another opportunity to expand its characters and relationships, but its viewing figures ultimately moved in the wrong direction.

Season 2 Lost Millions Of First-Week Views

Ransom Canyon' Renewed For Season 2 By Netflix

The reported cancellation follows a substantial decline in the show’s opening-week audience.

When Season 1 arrived in 2025, Ransom Canyon attracted approximately 7.2 million views during its first week.

Season 2 returned in July 2026.

Its first-week total was 4.1 million views.

That represents a drop of approximately 3.1 million views compared with the equivalent period for the first season.

For a streaming series attempting to secure another renewal, that decline was significant.

The reduced episode order and lower audience figures now provide important context for reports that Netflix has chosen not to proceed with a third season.

Fans Had Been Hoping For More

The apparent decision has been particularly disappointing for viewers who embraced Ransom Canyon as an easy-going drama in the tradition of Virgin River.

Neither Duhamel nor Kelly has publicly commented on the reported cancellation.

Fans, however, have already been reacting.

Some directed their disappointment toward Duhamel’s Instagram account, even though his latest post had nothing to do with the series.

“I can’t believe Netflix cancelled my fav show!” one person wrote.

Another commented: “I’m literally so sad there’s not going to be a season 3, this was my fav show.”

A third told the actor: “I am very sorry they cancelled your show. It was so good. I loved it! Netflix made a big mistake.”

Those reactions suggest the series had developed a devoted audience even if its overall viewing numbers had declined.

Netflix Has Not Officially Confirmed The Decision

For viewers disappointed by the report, there is an important distinction to keep in mind.

Netflix itself has not yet announced the cancellation.

The report comes from Deadline, while the streamer has not publicly confirmed that Ransom Canyon is finished.

The Mirror’s publisher, Reach PLC, has contacted Netflix seeking comment.

Duhamel and Kelly have also remained publicly silent about the show’s reported fate.

Until Netflix issues its own statement, the cancellation therefore remains reported rather than formally announced by the company.

A Short Run For A Much Bigger Book Series

If the cancellation stands, Ransom Canyon will conclude after just 18 episodes across two seasons.

That makes for a relatively brief screen life considering the show was adapted from Thomas’ bestselling novel series.

Its combination of romance, family conflict and Western landscapes had given Netflix another potential long-running comfort drama.

Season 2’s declining numbers, however, appear to have complicated that future.

The difference between its two launches was substantial: 7.2 million first-week views for Season 1 compared with 4.1 million for Season 2.

And although passionate fans clearly wanted the story to continue, streaming renewals ultimately depend on a much wider collection of factors than enthusiasm from the show’s most dedicated audience.

Fans May Have To Say Goodbye To Ransom Canyon

For now, the existing story remains available for viewers who want to visit — or revisit — the series.

Both seasons deliver the combination that originally attracted its audience: sprawling Texas scenery, complicated relationships, family conflicts and the romantic drama that led to comparisons with Virgin River and Yellowstone.

But unless the reported decision changes, there will be no Season 3.

That leaves Ransom Canyon as another Netflix drama that found a loyal following without becoming large enough to secure a longer run.

And judging by the early fan reaction, plenty of viewers were not ready to leave Texas Hill Country behind.

Ransom Canyon Season 2 is streaming on Netflix now.
