17 contestants eliminated. One “easy” picture. Just 30 seconds. A seemingly simple The 1% Club puzzle caught out 17 players when they failed to spot what the image was really trying to say. Some viewers thought it was obvious. But under the pressure of the clock, even the simplest-looking clue can suddenly become a lot harder. Would you have seen the hidden answer in time?

The 1% Club picture puzzle eliminates 17 contestants in just 30 seconds

A picture puzzle that looked almost too simple left 17 contestants eliminated on The 1% Club — all because they failed to spot the phrase hidden in the image within 30 seconds.

Saturday’s episode of the ITV quiz show, hosted by Lee Mack, challenged contestants with a visual puzzle at the 25% stage of the game.

Could you work out where you were going?

Lee introduced the challenge by telling the remaining players: “Right we are at the 25 per cent stage now. In this puzzle, where are you going?”

The image showed the word “ROUND” surrounded by several coloured circles.

Contestants had just 30 seconds to work out what the arrangement represented.

When the time was up, Lee revealed the answer: “Round in circles.”

The wording was the key. Rather than simply reading the word on the screen, players had to notice that “ROUND” was literally positioned within circles.

However, the apparently straightforward puzzle proved costly. 17 contestants were eliminated, including a player named Harvey.

Harvey told Lee that he had answered “round the centre” instead, but his response was not accepted and he was knocked out of the competition.

Viewers had very different reactions

While 17 contestants failed to solve the puzzle in time, some viewers watching at home thought the episode was surprisingly easy.

One person described it as “another abysmally easy episode” of The 1% Club on X.

Another viewer said the 5% question had been so easy that it felt more like a 90% question.

A third viewer claimed they had correctly answered the final question for three consecutive weeks.

The contrasting reactions highlighted one of the show’s central challenges: a puzzle that seems obvious when the answer is known can be much harder to recognise when contestants have only seconds to find the intended connection.

Puzzle: Where are you going? Round in circles.

The episode eventually ended with Marc winning the £94,000 prize.

The result came after a series of increasingly demanding questions designed to test logic, reasoning and common sense rather than conventional general knowledge.

The 1% Club begins with 100 contestants, who are gradually eliminated as the questions become more difficult. The ultimate goal is to reach the final question — one that only 1% of the public is expected to answer correctly.

It wasn’t the first visual puzzle to cause trouble

The show has previously caught contestants out with seemingly simple picture-based challenges.

In another episode, a large group of players were eliminated by a question viewers considered “easy”.

A picture of a cat also proved troublesome for some contestants, showing once again how quickly a familiar image can become a difficult puzzle when players are racing against the clock.

For those watching from home, the challenge is simple: seeing the answer is one thing. Finding it in 30 seconds, with the pressure of elimination hanging over you, is another.
