Brad Pitt has undergone a striking transformation for one of his most intriguing upcoming projects — a psychological thriller built around a disappearance that sends one father spiraling across Europe in search of answers.

The 62-year-old actor was barely recognizable in photographs taken during filming of The Riders in Amsterdam, sporting long, disheveled hair, a salt-and-pepper beard and weathered clothing.

Even more telling were the injuries.

One close-up showed Pitt with what appeared to be a bloody scratch above his left eyebrow and red marks across his face, offering an early hint of the physical and emotional ordeal awaiting his character.

Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Edward Berger and produced by A24, the film is adapted from Tim Winton’s Booker Prize-nominated 1994 novel — and is already attracting early awards-season attention before a release date has even been announced.

Photographs from the Amsterdam set reveal a noticeably different version of the Hollywood star.

Instead, Pitt has long, untidy hair and a thick graying beard. He was photographed wearing heavy knitwear and a textured jacket, creating the impression of a man who has been living through an exhausting ordeal.

Filming has taken place across Ireland, Greece and other European locations, with Pitt photographed working on scenes in Amsterdam earlier this year.

Based On A Booker-Nominated Novel

The Riders comes with considerable literary pedigree.

Australian author Tim Winton published the novel in 1994, and it was subsequently shortlisted for the Booker Prize.

The book follows Scully’s obsessive search after Jennifer fails to arrive as expected, using his journey through Europe to explore marriage, abandonment, identity and the destructive power of unanswered questions.

That psychological dimension makes the project particularly suited to Edward Berger.

The filmmaker won international acclaim for All Quiet on the Western Front, which collected four Academy Awards, including Best International Feature Film.

Berger later directed the Vatican thriller Conclave, another major awards contender.

For The Riders, he is working with A24, the studio behind a long list of critically acclaimed films.

The combination of Berger, Pitt, Winton’s source material and A24 has already helped generate early Oscar speculation around the project.

Pitt Leads A Strong Ensemble Cast

Pitt isn’t carrying the story alone.

Coco Greenstone, known for I Am Woman, joins the cast alongside Julianne Nicholson, whose credits include Paradise.

The supporting lineup includes Michael Smiley of Bad Sisters and Danny Huston, known for films including The Aviator.

French actress Camille Cottin, familiar to audiences from Call My Agent!, also appears.

Ulrich Thomsen, Lara Pulver and Kimonas Kouris round out the ensemble.

Despite filming already taking place, an official release date for The Riders has yet to be confirmed.

That means audiences may have to wait before discovering exactly how Berger has translated Winton’s novel to the screen.

The project nevertheless joins an unusually busy period for Pitt.

He is currently promoting the survival thriller Heart of the Beast, while several other high-profile films are also in development or approaching release.

Cliff Booth Is Coming Back

Among Pitt’s most anticipated projects is another appearance as Cliff Booth, the laid-back stuntman who earned him an Academy Award for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Pitt is set to reprise the character in The Adventures of Cliff Booth.

The project returns to the world established by Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 film, in which Pitt starred opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.

Cliff Booth became one of the most celebrated roles of Pitt’s career, earning him the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

The upcoming film is expected to arrive later this year.

Ocean’s Is Also Calling Again

Pitt also has another familiar character waiting in the wings.

He is expected to return as Rusty Ryan for Ocean’s 14, reuniting with several major stars from the hugely successful heist franchise.

The project is currently in pre-production.

George Clooney is expected back as Danny Ocean, with Pitt, Matt Damon and Julia Roberts also attached.

It will bring Pitt back to a franchise that became a defining part of his early-2000s filmography.

Yet The Riders appears to offer something very different from those crowd-pleasing returns.

There are no elaborate casino robberies here and little indication of Cliff Booth’s effortless cool.

Instead, Pitt plays a father whose world is shattered by a single moment at an airport.

His wife was supposed to walk through the arrivals gate.

Only his daughter appeared.

Everything that follows grows from that absence.

The unkempt hair, graying beard and battered face seen in the first set photographs suggest Scully’s search will leave its mark long before he gets the answers he is looking for.

And with Edward Berger behind the camera, acclaimed source material underneath it and A24 backing the project, The Riders is shaping up to be one of Pitt’s most dramatically demanding films in years.
