The 1% Club final question sparks debate as viewers spot a surprising detail

A seemingly straightforward final question on The 1% Club left viewers split after some spotted a detail that appeared to change the answer.

The ITV game show, hosted by Lee Mack, puts 100 contestants through 15 increasingly difficult questions, with players aiming to reach the final 1% question. A correct answer can lead to a share of the jackpot, which in this episode stood at £97,000.

The latest episode aired on Thursday, December 12, with five contestants making it through to the final question.

Among them was Emma, who had earlier joked about wanting to spend her winnings on a gaming mouse after being introduced to World of Warcraft by her partner.

But the mood changed when the final challenge appeared on screen.

The £97,000 question

The contestants were shown a paragraph containing several hidden number names:

“Everyone! Pay attention and listen up. Focus in these frightening and lonely thirty seconds.”

They were then asked:

“In this whole paragraph, how many times in total is the name of a number written down?”

With the full £97,000 prize available, all five finalists chose to play for the jackpot.

Four, including Emma, gave the correct answer: seven.

That meant the £97,000 prize was split between them, with each contestant taking home £24,250.

But viewers spotted a problem

While the contestants managed to crack the puzzle, some viewers watching at home were left questioning exactly what should count as a number name.

One viewer argued that “second” should also have been included because it is an ordinal number, suggesting the answer could therefore have been eight rather than seven.

Another viewer admitted to completely miscounting the numbers, joking that a few drinks at their Christmas party might have been responsible.

The debate showed just how easily the wording of a seemingly simple question could become part of the challenge.

Others thought it was incredibly easy

Not everyone struggled.

Some viewers were convinced they had spotted the pattern almost immediately, with one describing it as the “easiest 1% question I’ve seen!”

Another viewer explained their calculation: four tens, two ones and one thirty, giving a total of seven.

Someone else said they had missed the “ten” hidden inside “frightening”, but noticed a backwards nine elsewhere in the paragraph and still arrived at the correct total.

So while the finalists had to make the calculation under the pressure of the final round, viewers at home had their own challenge: deciding exactly which words were supposed to count.

In the end, four contestants got the intended answer and shared the jackpot — but the discussion over whether every number had really been counted showed that even a question with a seemingly clear answer could leave The 1% Club audience debating the rules.
