People couldn’t even agree on the answer to this “simple” maths question… A The 1% Club puzzle involving a few houses and one missing number left viewers struggling to spot the pattern — with some guessing 17 or 23, while 10 contestants used their pass rather than risk getting it wrong. The trick wasn’t complicated maths. It was noticing how the numbers in the windows, roof and door worked together. Some viewers got it in seconds. Others admitted they were nowhere close. Would you have cracked it before the clock ran out?

The 1% Club question leaves viewers baffled as simple house puzzle proves surprisingly difficult

A seemingly straightforward maths puzzle on The 1% Club left viewers scrambling for an answer, with several admitting they simply could not work it out before the clock ran down.

The ITV quiz show returned with another round of logic-based challenges, but one 20% question proved particularly frustrating for contestants and viewers alike.

Can you find the missing number?

Hosted by Lee Mack, The 1% Club brings together 100 contestants and gradually increases the difficulty of its questions.

The show’s premise is based on a survey of the British public: while around 90% are expected to answer the opening question correctly, only 1% are predicted to solve the final challenge.

This time, contestants were faced with a maths puzzle involving a series of houses. Each house contained numbers positioned in its windows, roof and door, and players had only a short amount of time to determine what number should replace the question mark.

For viewers watching at home, it looked simple enough — but the solution was far from obvious under time pressure.

The answer was 12

Some viewers suggested answers including 17 and 23, while others managed to spot the correct pattern.

The missing number was 12.

The rule was to add the numbers shown in the windows and then subtract the number on the roof. The result gives the number displayed in the door.

Once that relationship is recognised, the puzzle becomes much easier to follow. But contestants had to identify the pattern while the clock was running.

Contestants admit they struggled

The question proved costly, with a handful of contestants eliminated from the game and 10 others using their free pass to stay in contention.

Viewers also took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to admit they had struggled to reach the answer in time.

One viewer named Mark said: “I had to use my pass there, and I normally love maths questions.”

Others were equally frustrated by the time limit. Mariposa admitted, “I just couldn’t do it in the time,” while Thomas said he managed to get the answer in the final 10 seconds.

Susan said she knew a difficult question was coming, while Neil described the night’s questions as “ridiculously hard.”

Ronan was even more blunt, saying: “I wasn’t even close, I was never getting that one.”

The puzzle was another example of how The 1% Club can turn a simple-looking calculation into a race against the clock — where spotting the right pattern can matter just as much as knowing the maths.
