BBC Only Connect fans fume as Victoria Coren Mitchell accepts ‘wrong’ answer

Viewers of BBC quiz show Only Connect were left divided after Victoria Coren Mitchell appeared to accept a series of answers that some fans felt did not quite fit the clues.

The controversy unfolded during Monday night’s episode, which saw new teams Too Many Cookes and Pipe-Dreamers go head-to-head.

Victoria Coren Mitchell faced criticism early in the programme after appearing to show some leniency towards Too Many Cookes, particularly when the team offered answers that viewers felt were questionable.

At one point, team captain Jonathan Cooke gave the answer “Niversity Challenge” to a question asking for the connection between films whose titles were missing the letters representing their age classifications.

Coren Mitchell accepted the answer and later acknowledged that she had been generous with the team.

“I’ll take it, I’ll take it,” she told Jonathan.

She then added: “I’m going to look for an opportunity to be lenient with you guys later.”

Host’s leniency becomes a talking point

The presenter returned to the subject later in the episode when Too Many Cookes had an opportunity to steal points from Pipe-Dreamers.

Although the team was close to the answer, Coren Mitchell decided not to award the bonus.

“You’re close but I think a couple of times already this evening I’ve given it to you for nearly answers, and this is for a bonus so I’m not going to,” she explained.

That exchange set the stage for the moment that generated the strongest reaction from viewers.

Too Many Cookes were presented with a picture round and asked to identify the common connection between the clues.

The first clue was an image of the sun. The second showed a shoe and a queue, while the third consisted of a tree, a bee and a knee.

Jonathan Cooke buzzed in with a guess of “Yokohoma”, but Coren Mitchell told him the answer was incorrect before handing the question over to Pipe-Dreamers.

The opposing team was also unable to solve the puzzle.

Coren Mitchell then explained the pattern behind the images.

“Clue three, it’s not clueing Tribbiani but look how it sort of is. This is where you see patterns in patterns!” she said.

The rhyme puzzle leaves viewers divided

The explanation revealed that the number of words in each clue was important.

Coren Mitchell counted the words through the sequence: “sun… shoe, queue… tree, bee, knee.”

She explained that there was one word rhyming with one, two words rhyming with two and three words rhyming with three.

That led to an unexpected connection involving Joey Tribbiani, the Friends character played by Matt LeBlanc.

“But tree-bee-a-knee. I mean, I love you for finding it there. Unfortunately, you can’t make a sequence of the Friends character with the others, otherwise I’d give you extra points for finding that,” Coren Mitchell told the contestant.

The sequence then moved on to four words that rhyme with four.

The remaining clues were door, Demi Moore, Thor and a boar.

The explanation quickly became one of the most discussed moments of the episode, particularly because viewers disagreed over whether sun and one actually rhyme.

The reaction was especially strong on X, where several Only Connect fans questioned both the answers accepted during the show and the construction of the picture round.

Only Connect viewers voice their frustration

One viewer criticised the decision to award Too Many Cookes points earlier in the programme, writing: “Can’t believe Victoria gave them that film question, they had absolutely no idea #onlyconnect.”

Another complained about what they saw as a pattern of leniency, posting: “She’s so lenient this series, accepting wrong answers as being correct.”

The rhyme question generated even more debate.

“Sun doesn’t rhyme with one #onlyconnect,” one viewer wrote.

Another agreed, saying: “Afraid I am in team ‘one and sun obviously don’t rhyme’ #onlyconnect.”

A further comment was even more emphatic: “Sun absolutely doesn’t rhyme with one #onlyconnect.”

The final clue also came under scrutiny, with one viewer objecting to the pronunciation involved in the sequence: “No, not for me! Thor certainly doesn’t rhyme with Four though. #Onlyconnect #DialectDependent.”

The disagreement highlighted how pronunciation can affect a puzzle built around rhyming words, with viewers evidently split over whether the sounds in the sequence worked for them.

Too Many Cookes take the win

Despite the debate surrounding several answers, Too Many Cookes ultimately came out on top.

The team finished the contest with 27 points, while Pipe-Dreamers ended on 20.

The result gave Too Many Cookes victory in their first-round encounter, although it was the disputed answers and the unusual rhyme puzzle that dominated much of the reaction from viewers after the programme aired.
