Netflix Viewers Are Calling This Series ‘Dangerously Addictive’ — Fans Say One Episode Turns Into An Entire Night As They Binge The Whole Thing Without Realising It’s Already 3AM

Netflix Viewers Recommend ‘Dangerously Addictive’ 22-Episode Drama That Became No. 1 in 21 Countries — With Fans Calling It ‘Jaw-Dropping’

The Polygamist

Finding a new Netflix series is easy. Finding one capable of destroying your bedtime is considerably harder.

But viewers searching for exactly that kind of binge have been repeatedly pointed toward a 22-episode drama packed with secret families, affairs, money and betrayal — with some fans issuing playful warnings about just how intense the experience becomes.

The recommendation emerged after a TikTok user asked people to name a “dangerously addictive” Netflix show capable of keeping someone watching until 3am.

One title quickly stood out: The Polygamist.

And its success hasn’t been limited to social media recommendations.

The South African telenovela, produced by Stained Glass TV Productions, arrived on Netflix on June 12, 2026 and became one of the platform’s biggest African hits, reaching No. 1 in 21 countries.

One Funeral Opens the Door to an Extraordinary Web of Secrets

The Polygamist

The story begins with the funeral of Jonasi Gomora, a wealthy and charismatic self-made banking tycoon and CEO.

From there, flashbacks gradually dismantle the seemingly perfect life he had built.

Jonasi appeared to have everything alongside his wife Joyce, a bold social media influencer.

Behind that image, however, was another existence entirely.

He had secretly maintained a complicated network of affairs, mistresses and hidden families.

As Joyce and the other women begin discovering the true scale of the deception, the family structure starts collapsing, pushing everyone involved into an increasingly intense psychological and emotional battle.

The drama uses Jonasi’s double life to examine the distinction between traditional cultural polygamy and modern infidelity, while also exploring how wealth, status and patriarchal control can distort intimate relationships.

The 22-Episode Story Comes From a Novel

Why Netflix viewers worldwide are hooked on Zulu drama 'The Polygamist' : NPR

Despite its premise, The Polygamist isn’t based on a true story.

The drama is adapted from Zimbabwean author Sue Nyathi’s 2012 debut novel of the same name.

Its characters and storyline are fictional, although Nyathi drew inspiration from observations made early in her career, when she encountered men who publicly appeared to live monogamous lives while secretly maintaining multiple families.

That foundation provided the material for a sprawling 22-episode television adaptation built around the consequences of deception.

And viewers appear to be racing through it.

Fans Have One Warning Before You Start Watching

Recommendations for the series quickly became dramatic in their own right.

“Go watch The Polygamist and please don’t forget to breathe when watching it,” one viewer urged.

Another simply described the series as “Jaw-dropping.”

One recommendation came with an even more unusual piece of advice: “The Polygamist but please be single before watching.”

With all 22 episodes available together, viewers don’t have to wait for the next installment once the secrets begin unraveling.

For anyone who reaches the ending and immediately wants more, however, there is currently a catch.

Netflix has not officially renewed the drama for a second season, according to the supplied report. Producer Thuli Zuma has said the creative team has ideas for continuing the story and would like to return.

Until that happens, viewers have 22 episodes to get through.

A funeral, a powerful businessman, multiple hidden families and years of deception provide the starting point — and judging by viewers warning each other to remember to breathe, stopping after one episode may prove considerably harder.
