The 1% Club’s 70% Question Looked Easy… Then 21 Contestants Went OUT — Just Like That! “Hot. Hard. Small. Cold. Easy. ?” Six little words. One brutal pattern. And 21 players fell into the same trap. Tick-tock… The clock was running, three answers were staring them down, but only ONE could complete the sequence. Then came the reveal… The answer was hiding in plain sight, with every word connected by a clever opposite. Think You Can Crack The Final Word Before Time Runs Out?

The 1% Club’s deceptively simple word sequence question sends 21 contestants home

A question expected to be answered by 70% of The 1% Club contestants left 21 players eliminated after they failed to spot the simple pattern hiding in a sequence of everyday words.

The Lee Mack-fronted ITV quiz is designed to test logic and common sense rather than obscure general knowledge. The game begins with 100 contestants facing a question that 90% of the population should be able to answer, before gradually becoming more difficult until only 1% are expected to solve the final challenge.

But one early question proved surprisingly unforgiving.

The 70% question that caused a mass elimination

During the episode, which aired in October, contestants were presented with the sequence:

“Hot Hard Small Cold Easy ?”

They were then given three possible answers:

  • A: Big
  • B: Fast
  • C: Slow

Despite being a 70% question — a stage of the game that is generally intended to be more accessible — 21 contestants got it wrong and were eliminated.

The unusually large number of players knocked out left viewers at home struggling to understand how such a seemingly straightforward question had caused so much trouble.

As the eliminated contestants’ seat lights turned blue, Lee Mack joked: “Wow. There are now more blue people than a Smurf convention.”

Could you spot the pattern?

The correct answer was A: Big.

The trick was to look for the relationship between the words rather than simply treating them as an ordinary sequence.

As Lee explained, each word has its opposite somewhere else in the sequence.

Hot pairs with cold, while hard pairs with easy.

That leaves small, whose opposite is big.

So the missing word was Big.

Once the pattern was explained, the solution appeared much more obvious — but by then, 21 contestants had already paid the price for missing it.

It’s not the first early question to catch players out

The unusually high number of eliminations echoes another recent The 1% Club episode in which a large group of contestants struggled with an early question.

During the Christmas Special, more than a quarter of the contestants were eliminated by an 80% question.

The format may start with questions designed to be accessible to most people, but these examples show how quickly a seemingly basic puzzle can turn into a mass elimination.

With a new season currently airing, viewers will have even more chances to test themselves against the show’s increasingly deceptive questions.

Two upcoming specials are also set to arrive later this month: a Valentine’s Special and the programme’s first-ever kids’ version.

The 1% Club airs on Saturday nights on ITV.
