Stephen Graham’s New Thriller Has Viewers Hooked — But One Major Plot Hole Is Raising Eyebrows! In Nocturne, Graham plays a terrifying serial killer, but viewers are questioning why a lone, inexperienced medic was sent into his room without backup. Despite the criticism, his chilling performance is earning plenty of praise. One dangerous killer. One questionable decision. And a thriller sparking debate.

Viewers Spot a Major Plot Hole in Stephen Graham’s New Thriller Nocturne — But His Chilling Performance Is Winning Praise

Apple TV’s new thriller Nocturne has made a strong first impression, with Stephen Graham earning praise for his unsettling portrayal of a dangerous serial killer. However, while audiences are impressed by the actor’s performance, some viewers have already identified a questionable decision in the opening episode that has sparked debate online.

Graham plays Jurek Walter, a highly dangerous murderer serving a life sentence in solitary confinement at a psychiatric facility. His carefully controlled environment is designed to protect staff from the threat he poses. But when one of his presumed victims is discovered alive, the revelation triggers an urgent investigation to locate the victim’s missing sister.

The series quickly establishes Walter as a manipulative and unpredictable figure, with medical staff given strict instructions on how to interact with him. Yet viewers have questioned whether the facility’s security procedures make sense, particularly when it comes to the way employees are allowed to approach him.

Viewers Question the Facility’s Security Procedures

Following the first episode, several viewers took to social media to highlight what they considered a glaring inconsistency.

One viewer questioned why a patient described as the most dangerous person in the facility would be approached by a single medical worker without proper training or backup.

Another pointed out that staff had been explicitly warned not to engage with Walter or reveal personal information about themselves. However, the character appeared to disregard those instructions almost immediately after entering the room.

A third viewer raised similar concerns about the decision to send a new staff member to administer medication and search the cell of such a dangerous prisoner without anyone nearby to provide assistance.

The criticism centres on one particular aspect of the story: whether the facility’s staff would realistically take such risks when dealing with someone they had already been warned was extremely dangerous.

Stephen Graham’s Performance Is Winning Over Audiences

Despite the debate surrounding the opening episode, viewers have been enthusiastic about the series, with much of the praise directed at Graham’s disturbing portrayal of Jurek Walter.

Some audiences have described the character as someone they would never want to encounter alone, while others have highlighted the actor’s ability to create an unsettling atmosphere without relying on exaggerated behaviour.

Rory Culkin has also attracted positive attention for his expressive performance, with one viewer praising the way he helps establish the show’s eerie tone from the outset. Another described Graham’s portrayal as strange, uncanny and deeply sinister.

Others have been more direct in their admiration, simply declaring that Graham is brilliant in the role.

The response reflects the contrast at the heart of the early reaction to Nocturne: while some viewers are questioning the logic of certain plot developments, the performances are giving them plenty of reasons to keep watching.

How Stephen Graham Prepared to Play Jurek Walter

Will you be watching the Apple TV+ show?

Speaking to Esquire about his approach to the character, Graham explained that his priority was to create someone who felt believable and psychologically complex.

After reading the script, he was particularly interested in Walter’s ability to manipulate people and adapt his behaviour to different situations. Rather than approaching every interaction in the same way, the character first studies the person in front of him, works out what they expect and then adjusts his behaviour accordingly.

Graham described Walter as a chameleon who carefully reads each situation before deciding how to respond. This ability to understand and exploit other people became central to his interpretation of the serial killer.

The actor also worked on his physical appearance to make the character look genuinely threatening. He explained that getting into shape was part of his preparation, with the aim of creating someone who appeared capable of killing another person with his bare hands.

From there, Graham developed Walter alongside the director and writers, combining the character’s intimidating physical presence with the calculated manipulation that makes him so unsettling.

Although the first episode has prompted questions about the story’s security procedures, Graham’s performance has already become one of the series’ biggest talking points. For many viewers, it is his chilling portrayal of a calculating killer that makes Nocturne such an absorbing watch.
