Dolly Parton, Beloved Country Icon and Champion of the Smokies, Dies at 80

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Dolly Parton, the singer-songwriter, actress, philanthropist, and enduring symbol of Appalachian resilience whose voice and generosity touched millions, died Tuesday at the age of 80. She passed away peacefully at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville after a brief battle with cancer, surrounded by loved ones, according to statements from her family and representatives.

Her nephew Bryan Seaver announced the news on behalf of the Parton and Owens families, noting that Parton had lived “in the light” and was now “in the arms of Jesus,” reunited with her late husband Carl Dean, who died in March 2025, her parents, and others who had gone before her.

Born Dolly Rebecca Parton on January 19, 1946, in a one-room cabin in the Great Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee, the fourth of 12 children, she rose from profound poverty to become one of the most celebrated figures in American music. She wrote and recorded classics including “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” “9 to 5,” and “I Will Always Love You,” amassing more than 100 million records sold worldwide, dozens of chart-topping hits, and a career that spanned six decades. Beyond the stage and screen, she built Dollywood into a major economic engine for her hometown region and founded the Imagination Library, which has distributed hundreds of millions of books to children.

Yet for those who know the mountains she called home, Parton’s legacy was especially personal. With her death, we mourn the loss of a best friend of the Smokies. Dolly did so much for her hometown, her people, and her national park. She recorded albums and donated the proceeds to Friends of the Smokies. She donated tickets to her shows for our charity auctions. Dollywood is one of the great sponsors of Friends of the Smokies fundraising events.

In 2009, as ambassador for the 75th anniversary of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Parton stood at Newfound Gap and performed “My Mountains, My Home” live, a heartfelt tribute to the landscape that shaped her. The performance captured the deep bond between the artist and the place that raised her—a bond she never forgot, no matter how far her fame carried her.

Parton’s support for the park and its surrounding communities reflected the same spirit that defined her public life: practical kindness, rooted in the hills of Tennessee. She invested in literacy, health research (including significant support for COVID-19 vaccine development), and local economic opportunity while remaining unmistakably herself—witty, glamorous, and unapologetically proud of her origins.

Tributes have poured in from across the music world and beyond, reflecting the rare breadth of her appeal. She leaves behind an unmatched catalog, a theme park that employs thousands, a literacy program that continues to put books in children’s hands, and a model of how celebrity can be used for lasting good.

A private family service will be held. In the days ahead, fans and neighbors across the Smokies and far beyond will remember the woman who turned hardship into song and success into service.

Dolly, we will always love you.
