Love Her So Much. Kelly Clarkson stepped onto the Kennedy Center stage to honor Reba McEntire, but before she could even unleash that powerhouse voice, the emotion started taking over. Fighting back tears, Kelly spoke about what Reba meant not only to her, but to her children — even calling the country legend a “rad grandma.”

Kelly Clarkson’s Tribute to Her Friend Reba McEntire Is Something Special

Kelly Clarkson had plenty of reason to make her tribute to Reba McEntire memorable. The two share a long musical history, but their relationship has also grown into something much more personal. When Clarkson took the stage at the Kennedy Center Honors, she brought all of that affection and admiration with her.

Before singing, Clarkson became emotional as she spoke about McEntire and the role she has played in her family’s life. She described Reba as a “rad grandma” to her children, a heartfelt comment that showed just how close the two women have become.

Then Clarkson turned to the music, delivering a powerful performance in honor of her friend.

Reba McEntire’s “Does He Love You” Became a Country Classic

When Reba McEntire recorded “Does He Love You” in 1992, she was already an established star with a highly successful country music career.

Her record label immediately recognized the song’s potential. The original plan was for Reba to record it as a duet with another major country artist, and names such as Wynonna Judd and Trisha Yearwood were considered. Ultimately, Linda Davis became her duet partner, and the pairing proved to be a perfect fit.

“Does He Love You” went on to become Reba’s 18th number-one hit. The collaboration also earned McEntire and Davis a Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Collaboration.

The song’s appeal, however, extended well beyond its original recording.

Kelly Clarkson and Reba’s Powerful Performance

In 2007, Reba teamed up with Kelly Clarkson to perform “Does He Love You” for CMT Crossroads. The performance quickly showed why the song has remained such an effective showcase for two singers.

Clarkson and McEntire complemented each other vocally, bringing plenty of emotion and intensity to the performance. Viewers responded enthusiastically, with one fan writing, “These two ladies are fire together. Such feeling in this song.”

The performance has since attracted more than 11 million views.

Their chemistry was especially noticeable because they did more than simply sing the lyrics. Both singers fully embraced the drama at the heart of the song.

“Does He Love You” tells the story of a wife and a woman longing for the same man. Clarkson and McEntire took on those roles, directing their lines toward each other as though they were actually confronting one another over the complicated relationship.

That commitment to the characters made the performance feel like a conversation rather than a straightforward duet. Fans appreciated the theatrical approach, with one viewer observing: “No matter who Reba sings this with, she ALWAYS gets into full character and sings it straight from the heart as though she’s having this conversation.”

Reba Later Recorded the Song With Dolly Parton

McEntire returned to “Does He Love You” again in 2021, this time alongside another country music legend, Dolly Parton.

Although the recording was not considered an official single, it still made an impact on the charts, appearing on two different US country music charts.

Reba and Dolly also leaned into the song’s dramatic storyline when they filmed a music video. Rather than simply performing in front of the camera, the pair portrayed characters in a bar as they worked through the complicated affair described in the song.

The collaboration attracted millions of viewers, with the video reaching 6.2 million views. Fans also praised the opportunity to see two major figures in country music sharing the song.

Reba McEntire Continues to Add to Her Legacy

While revisiting “Does He Love You” has allowed Reba to reconnect with an important part of her musical past, her career has continued to evolve more than three decades after the song was first released.

In 2023, McEntire embarked on a tour across the United States and performed at Madison Square Garden for the first time.

Music has also remained only one part of her career. Reba has continued working as an actor, including an appearance in the drama series Big Sky. In 2023, she also took on a coaching role on The Voice.

For Kelly Clarkson, however, McEntire represents something more personal than a legendary country singer. Their history as collaborators has developed into a close friendship and family connection, which made Clarkson’s emotional tribute at the Kennedy Center Honors all the more meaningful.

Her performance was a celebration of Reba McEntire’s extraordinary career, but her words beforehand made clear that the tribute came from genuine affection for a friend who has become an important part of her family’s life.
