Lee Mack Presented The Remaining Players With A Seemingly Straightforward Scenario: “John Writes With His Right Hand And The Last Word He’d Write If He Was Writing This Sentence Would Be ‘Be’. If Keith Writes With His Left Hand, What Would Be The Last Word He Would Write In The Sentence Above?” It Sounded Simple Enough, But The Wording Forced Contestants To Think Carefully About How The Direction Of Writing Changed The Answer. With Just 30 Seconds On The Clock, Players Tried To Work Out The Trick Before Time Ran Out. In The End, 17 Contestants Were Eliminated, Turning A Seemingly Manageable 70% Question Into A Brutal Test Of Lateral Thinking. Even Lee Mack Was Taken Aback By The Result, Summing It Up With Two Words: “That’s Carnage.” 17 Players Gone On A 70% Question — But Would You Have Spotted The Trick In Time?

23 CONTESTANTS WIPED OUT BY THE 1% CLUB’S ‘EASY’ QUESTION — THE 30-SECOND TRICK THAT LEFT VIEWERS BAFFLED

TWENTY-THREE contestants were sent packing by an early The 1% Club question that many viewers thought was ridiculously easy — with fans struggling to understand how so many players got it wrong.

Lee Mack returned to ITV to put another 100 contestants through the show’s unique series of logic and reasoning challenges.

The rules are simple: players have just 30 seconds to work out each puzzle before the questions gradually become harder and the field is whittled down.

But one early question caused a huge collapse.

THE QUESTION THAT CAUGHT OUT 23 PLAYERS

Lee presented the remaining contestants with a seemingly straightforward scenario:

“John writes with his right hand and the last word he’d write if he was writing this sentence would be ‘be’. If Keith writes with his left hand, what would be the last word he would write in the sentence above?”

The question appeared during the 70% round.

At first glance, the reference to right- and left-handed writing seemed designed to make contestants overthink the puzzle.

But the key was much simpler.

The answer was “be.”

Changing the hand someone writes with does not change the order of the words in the sentence.

THEN CAME THE SHOCK

Screenshot of a game show question: "John writes with his right hand and the last word he'd write if he was writing this sentence would be 'be'. If Keith writes with his left hand, what would be the last word he would write in the sentence above?"

When the answers were revealed, a staggering 23 contestants had got it wrong.

Nearly a quarter of the original 100-player line-up had disappeared on a question that was supposed to be one of the more accessible tests.

The result left viewers at home completely baffled.

One fan shared a GIF of Reese Witherspoon’s Elle Woods from Legally Blonde sarcastically asking: “What, like it’s hard?”

Another viewer wrote: “How did 23 get this wrong?”

A third simply posted: “TWENTY THREE out on THAT?!?! ”

Others were equally incredulous.

One viewer wrote: “Being left handed doesnt mean you write words in the wrong order.”

Another admitted: “Too many people thinking too hard on that one #The1PercentClub.”

THE TRAP WAS OVERTHINKING IT

Screenshot of a quiz question: If John writes with his right hand, the last word he'd write is "be." If Keith writes with his left hand, what's the last word he'd write? The answer is "be."

The puzzle demonstrated one of the biggest challenges of The 1% Club.

The show doesn’t depend on obscure facts or specialist knowledge. Instead, contestants are expected to read carefully, ignore distractions and use basic logic under intense time pressure.

In this case, the mention of writing hands appeared to be the distraction.

Whether John writes with his right hand or Keith writes with his left, the final word of the sentence remains exactly the same.

Yet with only 30 seconds to decide, 23 contestants were caught by the wording.

THE JACKPOT GETS A BOOST

The mass elimination also had an impact on the prize pot.

The £5,000 jackpot rose to £28,000 after nearly a quarter of the contestants were knocked out.

That meant fewer players remained with a chance of reaching the show’s ultimate challenge — the notorious 1% question and the opportunity to compete for the much larger prize.

But the 23 players who disappeared in this round were left with the same painful realisation: sometimes the hardest part of The 1% Club is resisting the urge to make a simple question complicated.

And for viewers watching from home, there was an extra challenge — working out whether they would have spotted the trick before those crucial 30 seconds ran out.
