Harry And Meghan Keep Their $14.7m California Mansion As Montecito Faces Fresh Wildfire And Mudslide Threat

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may have returned to Britain after six years in America, but they have not completely left California behind.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are reportedly keeping their Montecito mansion as they settle into a new life in the UK with Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five. Meanwhile, the neighbourhood they have called home is preparing for another dangerous wildfire season — with officials introducing new measures to protect residents from fast-moving blazes.

The Montecito Fire Department and Montecito Water District are establishing two temporary firefighter housing locations that will operate during periods of particularly high fire risk.

The aim is to get emergency crews closer to remote areas where vegetation fires could spread quickly.

Firefighters Being Positioned Closer To High-Risk Areas

Montecito Fire Chief Brian Fallon said the initiative would significantly reduce the time it takes for firefighters to reach some of the district’s most vulnerable locations.

“By proactively positioning firefighters at these two locations on the far ends of our district, we can greatly reduce the time it takes to arrive on scene of a vegetation fire in remote wildland areas where our fire risk is the highest,” Fallon said.

The Montecito Water District is also backing the measures, with General Manager Nick Turner describing the initiatives as an important step towards increasing protection for local residents.

The concern is particularly relevant to Montecito, where wildfire threats remain a recurring part of life.

Southern California’s wildfire season typically runs from around April or May through October, although the risk can exist throughout the year.

Montecito Faces Another Dangerous Threat

Fire is not the only concern facing the wealthy California community.

Montecito has also experienced devastating mudslides, particularly after heavy rainfall follows major wildfires.

One area attracting concern is San Ysidro Creek, which is close to the gated community where Harry and Meghan’s mansion is located.

The danger comes from the way wildfires can strip vegetation from steep hillsides, leaving the ground more vulnerable when intense rain eventually arrives.

Residents have previously been forced to evacuate because of mudslides, and experts remain concerned about flooding risks when the rains return.

The 2018 Disaster Left A Lasting Scar

The scale of the danger was demonstrated in January 2018, when a catastrophic mudflow hit Montecito.

The disaster killed 23 people and injured 163, while causing around £131 million in property damage.

Emergency response costs reached approximately £5 million, with a further £32 million spent on cleanup.

The mudflow followed a series of major wildfires the previous month. Those fires devastated vegetation on steep slopes, destabilising the soil and creating conditions that made subsequent mudflows significantly more likely.

The risk was so serious that even the man who built the Sussexes’ California property later acknowledged that weather threats were not something he had considered sufficiently during construction.

“We sure as hell didn’t think about it [the mudslides] when we were building,” Terry told the Mail on Sunday, adding that it was something he would think about now.

Harry And Meghan Have Left — But The House Remains

The Sussexes’ decision to retain their Montecito home means their connection to the area is far from over.

After spending around six years in California, Harry and Meghan have now returned to Britain for an extended period and are reportedly establishing a new base in the Cotswolds.

Their children are also said to be attending local schools, marking a major shift in the family’s day-to-day life.

Yet their American mansion remains part of their story.

As Montecito prepares for another season in which wildfires, heavy rain and mudslides can all pose serious risks, Harry and Meghan’s California home continues to stand in a community where the beauty of the surroundings comes with a very real price.

They may have moved their family back across the Atlantic, but the risks surrounding the home they left behind have not disappeared.
