“Sun” rhymes with “one”? Only Connect fans were NOT convinced. Victoria Coren Mitchell faced backlash after accepting a questionable answer, before a 1–2–3–4 picture round sparked another huge debate. Even the final 27–20 win couldn’t stop viewers arguing over the clues.

BBC’s Only Connect sparks backlash as viewers insist a “wrong” answer was accepted

A seemingly generous ruling from Victoria Coren Mitchell left Only Connect viewers divided during Monday night’s episode, with some fans questioning whether the BBC quiz show had been too lenient with one team.

The latest episode introduced two new teams, Too Many Cookes and Pipe-Dreamers, each made up of three contestants competing to find connections between seemingly unrelated clues.

But the game quickly became a talking point after several answers from Too Many Cookes — and the decisions made by host Victoria Coren Mitchell — prompted criticism from viewers watching at home.

Victoria Coren Mitchell admits she is being “lenient”

BBC Only Connect: Too Many Cookes

One of the first contentious moments came when Too Many Cookes offered “Niversity Challenge” as their answer to a connection involving film titles with the letters representing their age classifications removed.

Coren Mitchell accepted the response and awarded the team the points.

The host then acknowledged that she had been somewhat lenient with the team. Speaking to captain Jonathan Cooke, she said: “I’ll take it, I’ll take it.”

She added: “I’m going to look for an opportunity to be lenient with you guys later.”

That opportunity came later when Too Many Cookes were given the chance to steal points from Pipe-Dreamers.

However, on that occasion, Coren Mitchell decided not to accept their response, explaining: “You’re close but I think a couple of times already this evening I’ve given it to you for nearly answers, and this is for a bonus so I’m not going to.”

The decision set the stage for an even more controversial moment later in the episode.

The picture round that left viewers arguing

BBC Only Connect: Too Many Cookes

The biggest talking point arrived during a picture round.

Too Many Cookes were shown a series of images and asked to identify the connection between them. The first clue was the sun. The second featured a shoe and a queue, while the third showed a tree, a bee and a knee.

Seeing the third set of images, Jonathan Cooke buzzed in with the answer “Yokohoma”, but Coren Mitchell ruled it incorrect before passing the question to Pipe-Dreamers.

Neither team initially managed to crack the intended connection.

Coren Mitchell then explained the pattern behind the clues, pointing out that the images represented a sequence based on words that rhyme with numbers.

As she counted through the clues, she explained that sun was intended to rhyme with one, while shoe and queue represented two, and tree, bee and knee represented three.

She also joked about the third group appearing to suggest Friends character Joey Tribbiani, saying: “I love you for finding it there.”

However, she clarified that the sequence required words rhyming with the relevant numbers.

The fourth group then provided door, Demi Moore, Thor and a boar, completing the sequence with words intended to rhyme with four.

Viewers question the answers

BBC Only Connect: Pipe-Dreamers

The explanation did little to settle the debate online.

Several Only Connect fans took to X to question both the answers offered by Too Many Cookes and Coren Mitchell’s decision to accept some of them.

One viewer complained that the team had been given the film question despite seemingly having little idea of the connection.

Another accused the host of being “so lenient this series”, claiming that answers had been accepted despite being wrong.

The pronunciation-based puzzle also attracted plenty of criticism, particularly over whether “sun” actually rhymes with “one.”

One viewer simply wrote: “Sun doesn’t rhyme with one.”

Others agreed, with one saying they were firmly on the side of “one and sun obviously don’t rhyme.” Another argued that “Thor certainly doesn’t rhyme with Four,” while acknowledging that the issue could be dialect-dependent.

Too Many Cookes take the win

Despite the controversy surrounding several answers, Too Many Cookes ultimately came out on top.

The team finished the episode with 27 points, while Pipe-Dreamers ended on 20.

For some viewers, however, the final score was not the only thing worth discussing, as the decisions surrounding the disputed answers became one of the night’s biggest talking points.
