17 PLAYERS WIPED OUT BY THE 1% CLUB’S “SIMPLE” NUMBER PUZZLE — THE MISSING NUMBER WAS HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT

It looked like one of those questions you could answer in seconds.
But when 30 seconds appeared on the clock, 17 contestants on The 1% Club still couldn’t spot the number that had disappeared.
Lee Mack challenged the players with a deceptively straightforward task: a sequence containing every number from 1 to 61, with just one number missing.
The question was simple:
“Here is a range of numbers from 1 to 61. What is the missing number?”

Every number was displayed in a mixture of colours, with the contestants given just half a minute to work out which one had vanished.
And then the eliminations began.
17 CONTESTANTS MISS THE OBVIOUS
Despite the question appearing relatively simple, 17 players failed to give the correct answer.
Lee Mack summed up the damage after the clock ran out, quipping:
“That was quite a lot of you, we have lost 17 there.”
The missing number was then revealed.
It was 29.
For eagle-eyed viewers, the giveaway was sitting right in the middle of the sequence: the numbers jumped directly from 28 to 30.
But with the pressure of the 30-second countdown, that tiny gap proved surprisingly easy to overlook.
THE 1% CLUB TRICK: SIMPLE DOESN’T MEAN EASY

That is exactly what makes The 1% Club so frustrating.
The ITV quiz show isn’t built around obscure facts or specialist knowledge. Instead, contestants are expected to rely on observation, logic and common sense — often while the clock is relentlessly counting down.
A question that seems almost too obvious can suddenly become much harder when dozens of people are staring at the screen and desperately trying to beat the timer.
And this time, 17 contestants paid the price for missing one tiny gap in a sequence of 61 numbers.
The result came after another brutal 1% Club question had already wiped out 32 players.
That challenge asked which option would be impossible: marrying your cousin’s cousin, your brother’s widow, or your widow’s sister.
The answer was the final option — because if someone is your widow, you would already be dead.
WOULD YOU HAVE SPOTTED 29?

The missing-number puzzle may have looked harmless compared with some of the show’s more complicated challenges, but the result proved how quickly a seemingly easy question can turn into a disaster.
With only 30 seconds to scan the sequence, 17 people failed to notice that 29 was the only number missing.
For those who spotted the jump from 28 to 30, it was obvious.
For everyone else, the countdown ran out before the answer became clear.
And that is the cruel beauty of The 1% Club: sometimes the hardest part isn’t knowing the answer.
It’s seeing what is right in front of you before the clock hits zero.
