Zara Tindall Secures Major Victory After 20 Years — And Gives the Royals Another Reason to Celebrate

Zara Tindall has given her family a double reason to celebrate after claiming one of the biggest individual titles of her equestrian career — on a particularly meaningful weekend for the royal family.
The 45-year-old royal took gold at the prestigious British Eventing Open Championship, held as part of Hartpury’s international NAF CCI4*-S competition. Riding her 17-year-old horse Class Affair, Zara secured the £5,000 prize and described the achievement as “amazing,” adding that she was “super happy” with the result.
The victory was made even more special by its timing. Zara’s mother, Princess Anne, celebrated her 76th birthday on August 15, meaning the royal family had another reason to mark the weekend.
A major milestone for Zara
The triumph represents Zara’s first major individual title since 2006, when she won at the World Equestrian Games riding Toytown.
She later helped Great Britain win team gold at the 2007 European Eventing Championship, but this latest individual success marks a significant return to the top after two decades.
True to her reputation as a gracious competitor, Zara was quick to share the credit after her victory. She praised Class Affair for doing an “amazing job” and also highlighted the event’s ground staff, who worked through difficult heatwave conditions to keep the course in competition condition.
Zara even joked about her long-running inability to win the championship when it was held at her family’s Gatcombe estate.
Following in Princess Anne’s footsteps

Zara’s latest achievement adds another chapter to an extraordinary equestrian family legacy.
Her mother, Princess Anne, became the first member of the British royal family to compete at the Olympics when she represented Britain at the 1976 Montreal Games.
More than three decades later, Zara went one step further. At the 2012 London Olympics, she won a silver medal as part of Team GB’s eventing team, becoming the first British royal to win an Olympic medal.
Her latest victory is therefore another reminder of just how closely Zara’s sporting career has followed — and in some respects surpassed — her mother’s historic achievements.
Prince William has previously admitted Zara’s victories make him emotional
Zara’s latest win is also likely to have delighted her cousin Prince William, who has previously spoken openly about how emotional he became while watching her compete.
Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Rugby, which is co-hosted by Zara’s husband Mike Tindall, William recalled watching Zara compete at the European Championships while he was camping in Exmoor.
He remembered seeing her celebrate with tears as the British flag was raised, admitting: “I was in pieces.”
For Zara, however, the focus after her latest triumph remained firmly on the sport, her horse and the team behind her.
But with a major title returning to her hands after 20 years — and the victory arriving during her mother’s birthday weekend — this was certainly a weekend the Tindall family had plenty to celebrate.
