A Chilling Discovery Rocks The Shetland Islands As A Twisted New Murder Mystery Begins… But After 13 Years, Alison O’Donnell Is Preparing To Leave The BBC’s Beloved Crime Drama, Turning Its Latest Investigation Into One Of The Most Emotional Chapters In The Show’s History

Shetland Season 11 Gets Official Release Date as Alison O’Donnell Prepares to Say Goodbye to Tosh

The BBC has confirmed when Shetland will return for its eleventh season, bringing fans closer to a major turning point for the long-running crime drama. The new episodes will premiere on BBC One on Thursday, November 12, at 9pm, marking Alison O’Donnell’s final appearance as much-loved detective DI Alison “Tosh” McIntosh.

Based on the award-winning novels by crime writer Ann Cleeves, the series follows detectives investigating complex and often disturbing cases across Scotland’s Shetland Islands. Since its debut in 2013, the show has become a mainstay of the BBC’s drama schedule, earning a loyal audience through its atmospheric setting and intricate mysteries.

O’Donnell initially starred alongside Douglas Henshall, who played DI Jimmy Perez through the end of season seven. Following his departure, Ashley Jensen took over as DI Ruth Calder, continuing the series alongside O’Donnell’s Tosh.

With the upcoming season set to introduce another unsettling investigation, viewers will also be preparing to bid farewell to one of the drama’s most familiar faces.

The new season begins with the discovery of a historic murder that has far-reaching consequences for people connected to the case in the present day.

The mystery starts when a car is recovered from the water. Inside its boot, investigators discover the decomposed skeletal remains of an unidentified man, prompting Calder and Tosh to establish who he was and how he ended up there.

Their investigation leads them to the vehicle’s former owner: a respected local GP who left the islands nine years earlier amid troubling rumours.

As the detectives investigate the doctor’s state of mind and examine the lives of the people he left behind, the case takes increasingly dangerous turns. Their search for answers draws them into a complex web of secrets, with the truth proving difficult to uncover.

The investigation will once again place Calder and Tosh at the centre of a dark mystery shaped by the close-knit community and complicated histories of the Shetland Islands.

Who is returning for season 11?

Samuel Anderson as Matt Blake in Shetland

Ashley Jensen and Alison O’Donnell will reprise their roles as DI Ruth Calder and DI Alison “Tosh” McIntosh.

The returning cast also includes Steven Robertson as DC Sandy Wilson, Lewis Howden as Sergeant Billy McCabe, Samuel Anderson as Procurator Fiscal Matt Blake, Steven Miller as Reverend Alan Calder, and Anne Kidd as pathologist Cora McLean.

Angus Miller will return as Donnie, Tosh’s partner, alongside Conor McCarry as PC Alex Grant and Eubha Akilade as PC Lorna Burns.

The eleventh season will also introduce several new cast members. They include Christine Bottomley (Sherwood), Kevin Harvey (This City Is Ours), Stella Gonet (The Crown), Gregor Fisher (Only Child), Gavin Mitchell (Crime), John Wark (Lockerbie: A Search for Truth), Jude Bain (Let It Come Down) and Robin Weaver (Rivals).

Why is Alison O’Donnell leaving Shetland?

O’Donnell announced her departure in June, explaining that she was ready to explore new opportunities after spending 13 years with the series.

Reflecting on her time playing Tosh, the actress said the role had been central to her development both professionally and personally.

“I grew up in this job,” she said in a statement.

She explained that the experience had shaped her as an actor and collaborator, adding that the Shetland Islands had become a second home for her and her family.

Although leaving the series would be difficult, O’Donnell said she was looking forward to the future and to taking the lessons and experiences she had gained from the show into whatever came next.

She also described playing Tosh as “the greatest gift an actor could hope for.”

As season 11 approaches, O’Donnell’s departure adds an emotional dimension to the new investigation. While Calder and Tosh tackle another complex case, the season will also mark the end of an era for a character who has been part of Shetland since its early days.
