I Nearly Skipped This BBC War Film—Then Viewers Started Calling It a Masterpiece, Praising Its Unique and Daring Storytelling, and Revealing One Unforgettable Moment That Makes This Hidden Gem Impossible to Forget

Ralph Fiennes’ ‘Masterpiece’ War Drama Is Streaming Free — With Gerard Butler’s Terrifying Performance Helping It Earn a 92% Rotten Tomatoes Score

With streaming subscriptions piling up, finding an acclaimed film that doesn’t require another monthly payment can feel increasingly rare.

Coriolanus

But BBC iPlayer is currently offering a striking war drama completely free to watch — and critics have praised it as a “masterpiece.”

Coriolanus takes one of Shakespeare’s lesser-known tragedies and drops it into a brutal modern battlefield filled with firearms, television cameras and contemporary warfare.

Ralph Fiennes both directs and stars, while Gerard Butler, Brian Cox and Jessica Chastain round out an impressive cast.

More than a decade after its release, the film holds a 92% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Yet audiences have been far more divided — and the reason appears to lie in one daring decision Fiennes refused to abandon.

Shakespeare’s Rome becomes a modern war zone

CORIOLANUS

Released in 2012, Coriolanus follows General Caius Martius, a ferocious soldier whose battlefield victory against Rome’s enemies earns him the name Coriolanus.

His success pushes him toward a very different arena: politics.

But Coriolanus isn’t naturally suited to political compromise.

His blunt personality and refusal to bend eventually contribute to his exile from Rome.

Cast out by the society he once defended, he turns toward the person who should be his greatest enemy and forms an alliance capable of threatening Rome itself.

Fiennes retains the foundations of Shakespeare’s tragedy while placing the action inside a recognizable modern world.

Soldiers carry firearms. Battles resemble contemporary military conflicts. Political tensions unfold against imagery that feels much closer to the 21st century than ancient Rome.

Yet one crucial element remains unchanged.

The characters still speak Shakespeare.

Ralph Fiennes took on two enormous roles

Ralph Fiennes and Gerard Butler Starred in a Criminally Underrated War Movie

Fiennes didn’t merely step in front of the camera as Coriolanus.

He also directed the film.

His central performance is surrounded by a formidable ensemble, including Gerard Butler as Coriolanus’ adversary, while Succession star Brian Cox and Jessica Chastain also feature prominently.

Butler’s performance proved particularly memorable for at least one enthusiastic viewer.

The reviewer, who awarded the movie five stars, admitted initially being surprised by the Shakespearean dialogue before becoming completely absorbed.

“I would say it is a masterpiece,” they wrote.

But it was Butler who delivered one of the moments they found most frightening.

“Butler absolutely terrified me with one of his warrior speeches,” the viewer said.

The intensity of his desire for vengeance, they added, gave new meaning to the familiar idea that “war is hell.”

Critics embraced the ambitious adaptation

Ralph Fiennes Discusses 'Coriolanus'

The unusual combination of Shakespearean language and contemporary warfare earned significant critical praise.

The film achieved a 92% “Certified Fresh” critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, according to the source.

Its modern setting allows Shakespeare’s story of war, pride, political power, exile and revenge to unfold against imagery that feels far removed from a traditional stage production.

That contrast became one of the adaptation’s defining characteristics.

Instead of updating Shakespeare’s words to match its modern setting, the film preserves the original language.

For some viewers, that makes the experience particularly powerful.

For others, it creates the movie’s biggest obstacle.

Audiences were much more divided

Review: Ralph Fiennes comes out guns blazing in 'Coriolanus' | CNN

Despite the strong critical response, the source reports a considerably lower 58% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

One recurring criticism concerns the Shakespearean dialogue.

Coriolanus isn’t as universally familiar as plays such as Romeo and Juliet, meaning viewers may not already know the story when they encounter its original language.

That can make following the plot more demanding.

One Rotten Tomatoes user argued that this helps explain the difference between the critical and audience reactions.

“The reason audience scores are lower is that most cannot understand the content and its relevance to modernity,” they wrote.

But the same viewer strongly defended the adaptation.

“This is a great adaptation of Coriolanus,” they continued, praising its ability to move Shakespeare’s story into the modern era with “powerful performances.”

An acclaimed war drama without another subscription

For viewers willing to embrace Shakespeare’s original language, Coriolanus offers something considerably different from a conventional war movie.

Its world looks contemporary, but its characters speak words written centuries ago.

Fiennes places political ambition, betrayal and vengeance alongside modern combat, while Butler, Cox and Chastain help fill out a cast capable of matching the material’s intensity.

That combination proved challenging for some audiences but deeply rewarding for others.

And unlike many acclaimed films scattered across paid streaming services, this one currently comes without another subscription bill.

Coriolanus is available to stream free on BBC iPlayer.
