Michael J. Fox Brings Nicole Kidman And Harrison Ford To Tears As He Vows Parkinson’s Will Never Make Him ‘Surrender’

Michael J. Fox brought some of Hollywood’s biggest stars to tears at the 2026 Emmy Awards as he delivered a deeply personal message about living with Parkinson’s disease for more than three decades.

The Back to the Future star, 65, appeared on stage in a wheelchair to accept the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, receiving an emotional standing ovation from the room.

Among those visibly moved were Nicole Kidman and Harrison Ford, Fox’s Shrinking co-star, as the actor reflected on the fear he once felt about revealing his diagnosis — and explained why accepting Parkinson’s never meant surrendering to it.

“I understood that accepting Parkinson’s didn’t mean I had to surrender to it,” Fox told the audience.

For a room filled with actors who had followed his career for decades, the moment proved overwhelming.

Fox Revealed The Fear He Kept Hidden

Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991 when he was just 29.

But for years, he kept the diagnosis private.

“Initially I kept my Parkinson’s diagnosis a secret,” he told the Emmy audience. “I worried it would affect my work and relationships with audiences.”

The actor even questioned whether revealing his illness would change the way viewers responded to him.

Would audiences still laugh, he wondered, if they knew he was sick?

For an actor who had become globally famous through comedy and the role of Marty McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy, it was a frightening uncertainty.

But when Fox eventually opened up about his condition, he discovered something very different from the rejection he had feared.

“I was stunned by the support from all of you, so uplifted and I hadn’t lost what I do,” he said.

“They couldn’t take it away from me. And it’s because you stood up for me. I appreciate it.”

Harrison Ford Was Visibly Emotional

The cameras captured the impact Fox’s words were having around the room.

Harrison Ford, 84, who worked alongside Fox in Shrinking, appeared emotional while applauding his former co-star.

Nicole Kidman, 59, was also seen wiping away tears as Fox continued.

The audience rose to its feet in recognition of an actor whose life after his diagnosis became increasingly devoted to Parkinson’s advocacy and research.

Fox then explained the realization that changed the way he approached his condition.

“I understood that accepting Parkinson’s didn’t mean I had to surrender to it,” he said.

“It just meant I had to do everything I could for everyone living with this disease.”

‘Sorry, I’m Losing It’

Fox went on to describe how that determination turned into a wider mission.

“I set out to advocate for Parkinson’s disease and raise money,” he said.

As he reflected on the people who had helped him build that effort, however, the emotion of the occasion briefly caught up with him.

“I found brilliant people to start — sorry, I’m losing it.”

He gathered himself and continued.

“I found people to lead the effort for me and vowed to fund the best science in the world.”

Fox said he was proud of the progress that had been achieved and remained focused on the ultimate goal.

“We move closer to eradicating this disease forever,” he said.

Decades Of Fighting For Parkinson’s Patients

Fox also used his speech to recognize the enormous network of people behind the work of the Michael J. Fox Foundation.

“I’m deeply grateful to our staff, donors, researchers, and most of all the patient community who make our work at the Michael J Fox foundation,” he said.

His remarks transformed the award from a celebration of one man’s achievements into recognition of the wider Parkinson’s community.

Fox’s public battle with the disease has now lasted for decades.

His diagnosis came at an age when his acting career was flourishing, and his initial instinct was to hide what was happening.

Over time, however, the illness that he once feared could destroy his relationship with audiences became central to his advocacy work.

His Most Personal Thanks Were Saved For His Family

Fox ended by turning his attention to the people who have lived through that journey alongside him.

He thanked his wife, Tracy Pollan, and their four children “for their sacrifices, for their patience, and for their love.”

“You have no idea,” he added.

He also thanked his mother, father, sisters and brother.

Fox and Pollan have been married for 38 years.

Earlier in the evening, the couple had appeared on the Emmy Awards red carpet with their four children before Fox took the stage for the emotional ceremony.

The family appearance gave additional weight to the thanks he later offered from the stage.

From Marty McFly To A Very Different Kind Of Legacy

Fox became one of the defining movie stars of the 1980s through his performance as Marty McFly in the Back to the Future films.

But his career would eventually become inseparable from the health battle he had initially tried to keep hidden.

After stepping away from acting for six years, Fox later returned to work, including his appearance in Shrinking alongside Ford.

He has said that continuing to act has helped “prolong” his life.

“It’s really prolonged my life and made my life interesting in a way that I didn’t think it would be to this point,” Fox said.

And despite the challenges created by Parkinson’s, he does not consider himself completely retired.

“I’m not retired from acting,” he said. “But if I didn’t act again, it would be for a very good reason.”

‘I Let Parkinson’s Make Decisions For Me’

Fox has reached a point where his health determines whether another acting role is possible.

“I let Parkinson’s make decisions for me,” he explained.

That acceptance, however, is very different from the surrender he rejected during his Emmy speech.

More than three decades after receiving a diagnosis that he once feared audiences could never know about, Fox found himself in front of an entire room of Hollywood peers who knew exactly what he had endured.

This time, there was nothing to hide.

Harrison Ford was emotional. Nicole Kidman was in tears. The audience was on its feet.

And Fox’s message was remarkably simple.

He had accepted Parkinson’s.

He had allowed it to change his life.

But he had never agreed to let it end his fight.
