Still Missing Mindhunter? Netflix Has A Dark Crime Drama Waiting To Fill The Void, Dragging Viewers Into A Disturbing Investigation Where Psychology Matters As Much As Evidence — And Understanding The Criminal Mind Could Be The Most Dangerous Part

Netflix Viewers Say This ‘Mesmerising’ 98% Crime Drama Is Unlike Anything Else In The Genre — And Some Couldn’t Stop After One Episode

Crime dramas are hardly difficult to find on Netflix.

From psychological investigations to serial-killer mysteries, the genre has become so crowded that seasoned viewers could be forgiven for feeling they have already seen every possible variation.

Yet one eight-episode miniseries continues to stand apart.

Unbelievable has earned an extraordinary 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while viewers have described it as “mesmerising,” “devastating and uplifting” and among the best television Netflix has produced.

And unlike many crime dramas built around the hunt for a criminal, this one places the experience of the victim at the heart of its story.

A Crime Drama Told From A Very Different Perspective

Released on Netflix on September 13, 2019, Unbelievable stars Kaitlyn Dever, Toni Collette and Merritt Wever.

Created by Susannah Grant, Ayelet Waldman and Michael Chabon, the eight-part miniseries is based on a true story.

Its central character is a teenager who reports that she has been raped.

But after she recants her account, she is accused of fabricating what happened.

Meanwhile, two female detectives investigating a series of similar attacks begin following evidence that could expose the truth.

Netflix summarizes the premise: “When a teen reports being raped, then recants her story, two female detectives follow evidence that could reveal the truth; based on a true story.”

It creates two interconnected sides of the story — the teenager dealing with the consequences of what happened to her, and the investigators gradually piecing together evidence elsewhere.

The True Story Behind The Series

Still from Unbelievable

Unbelievable draws from T. Christian Miller and Ken Armstrong’s 2015 article An Unbelievable Story of Rape, which examined the Washington and Colorado serial rape cases.

The series also takes material from their 2018 book A False Report, based on the same research.

Rather than treating the case simply as another mystery to be solved, the drama examines how victims are treated and what can happen when institutions fail to respond appropriately to their accounts.

That perspective became one of the elements most frequently singled out by critics.

One reviewer compared the series with Mindhunter, arguing that Unbelievable distinguishes itself by approaching events primarily through the victims and the women working within a largely male system.

Another praised its “unique take on cop dramas,” alongside its performances.

Three Performances At The Centre Of The Story

Dever, Collette and Wever lead an ensemble cast that also includes Eric Lange, Bill Fagerbakke, Elizabeth Marvel, Bridget Everett, Danielle Macdonald, Dale Dickey, Liza Lapira and Omar Maskati.

Their performances became one of the most acclaimed aspects of the series.

All three leading actresses received nominations at both the Critics’ Choice Awards and Golden Globes, with Collette winning at the Critics’ Choice Awards.

Collette also earned Primetime Emmy and SAG Award nominations.

One viewer praised the performances so highly that they admitted staying awake two hours later than planned because they could not stop watching.

“I couldn’t stop watching it,” the viewer wrote, describing themselves as “mesmerized by the performances.”

The Acclaim Went Far Beyond Audience Reviews

The series received widespread critical recognition following its release.

It won a Peabody Award and earned Best Limited Series nominations at the Critics’ Choice Awards, Golden Globes and Primetime Emmy Awards.

In total, Unbelievable received four Primetime Emmy nominations.

Its Rotten Tomatoes approval rating stands at a near-perfect 98%, with reviewers repeatedly highlighting both the performances and the way the sensitive subject matter was handled.

One critic called it “one of the most culturally relevant tv shows.”

Another described it simply as “a powerful, impactful show that will stay with you for a long time.”

But some of the strongest reactions have come from ordinary viewers discovering the series and realizing just how emotionally demanding the eight episodes can become.

‘Simultaneously Devastating And Uplifting’

One audience reviewer described the drama as “simultaneously devastating and uplifting.”

They praised its split narrative, performances and the way the story builds toward its conclusion.

“Unbelievable made me mad, made me sad cry, and made me happy cry,” they wrote.

The viewer also warned that the opening hour can be difficult because of the subject matter, but said the emotional journey ultimately had a very different effect by the end.

Another fan praised the handling of the story’s sensitive themes and singled out Collette and Wever’s performances as the two detectives.

They called the acting “very very realistic” and “nothing but outstanding.”

‘TV Can’t Get Any Better’

Real-life inspiration behind Netflix's Unbelievable calls series excellent

Another viewer went even further, describing the series as a “diamond.”

“TV can’t get any better,” they wrote on IMDb.

They said they rarely posted reviews but felt compelled to do so after watching the show, describing the performances of the three female leads as “absolutely outstanding.”

The writing and direction also received praise for tackling an extremely sensitive subject without turning the story into a conventional sensationalized crime thriller.

That careful approach is precisely why Unbelievable can feel so different from many series competing within the same genre.

There is a mystery and an investigation, but the emotional consequences of the crime remain central.

Eight Episodes That Leave A Lasting Impression

With only eight episodes, Unbelievable is relatively easy to binge in terms of length.

Emotionally, however, viewers have warned that it is anything but easy viewing.

The subject matter is disturbing, particularly during the opening stages, and the story does not shy away from the consequences of disbelief and institutional failure.

Yet that difficulty is also behind much of the praise.

Instead of relying solely on twists or increasingly elaborate crimes, the series builds its power through its characters, performances and the contrast between how different people respond to victims.

Years after its original 2019 release, its 98% Rotten Tomatoes score and passionate audience reviews continue to make it stand out in a genre filled with high-profile competition.

For viewers convinced they have already seen everything crime television has to offer, this largely self-contained eight-episode story may be the one that proves otherwise.

Unbelievable is available to stream on Netflix.
