Taylor Sheridan’s Record-Breaking Yellowstone Spinoff Is Back in Just Days — With Kayce Dutton Facing His Most Personal Fight Yet

The Yellowstone universe isn’t slowing down.

After becoming one of the biggest new dramas of the 2025-26 television season, Taylor Sheridan’s Kayce Dutton spinoff is already preparing to return — and its second season will be considerably bigger than its first.

Marshals brings Luke Grimes back as Kayce, but instead of returning him to the familiar rhythms of ranch life, the series sends the youngest Dutton into an entirely different world.

And despite a surprisingly rough response from critics and some longtime Yellowstone viewers, the numbers told a very different story.

Kayce Dutton Left the Ranch Behind

After Yellowstone, fans knew Beth and Rip’s story would continue in another spinoff.

Kayce’s future was less certain until his own series was confirmed in May 2025.

Marshals premiered on CBS and Paramount+ on March 1, 2026, following Kayce as he leaves ranch life behind and joins the U.S. Marshals.

The series retained elements of the Western action and family drama associated with Yellowstone, while moving into a more episodic procedural format.

That creative shift proved divisive.

According to the source, Season 1 received just 48% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, while its audience score stood at an even lower 29%.

But viewers apparently kept watching anyway.

Its Premiere Broke a Nine-Year Record

The debut episode attracted a reported 20.6 million multiplatform viewers during its first week.

That made it the most-watched network original series premiere without the benefit of a football lead-in since Young Sheldon debuted in 2017 with 17.21 million viewers.

The numbers remained impressive beyond the premiere.

Across the 2025-26 broadcast season, Marshals reportedly averaged 19.3 million viewers in 35-day multiplatform viewing, making it the season’s No. 1 drama.

So while its reviews suggested a troubled start, its commercial performance told almost the opposite story.

CBS didn’t wait long to make a decision.

Marshals was renewed for Season 2 only 11 days after its premiere.

Season 2 Picks Up After a Very Personal Threat

Season 1 concluded on May 24, and production on the next chapter reportedly began the following month.

The new episodes will deal with the aftermath of events involving Kayce’s son Tate, played by Brecken Merrill.

Tate was placed in danger by Tom Weaver, played by Chris Mulkey, making the stakes for Kayce deeply personal heading into the new season.

But another familiar face from the Yellowstone universe is also returning.

Jimmy Hurdstrom Is Coming Back

Jefferson White will reprise his role as Jimmy Hurdstrom in a recurring capacity.

Yellowstone fans will remember Jimmy’s transformation from a troubled ranch hand into a cowboy, with John Dutton eventually sending him to the legendary 6666 Ranch in Texas during Season 4.

Jimmy briefly returned during Season 5, but his story ultimately left him in Texas when Yellowstone ended.

CBS describes the returning character as the former troubled ranch hand who grew into a proud cowboy.

Exactly how Jimmy becomes involved in Kayce’s new life with the U.S. Marshals remains one of the intriguing questions surrounding the next chapter.

The Second Season Is Getting Much Bigger
