‘Marshals’ Season 2 Throws Kayce Dutton Into A Desperate Rescue Mission — As Luke Grimes Teases Tate’s Trauma, New Romance And A Possible Beth Crossover

Kayce Dutton survived years of violence, loss and family warfare on Yellowstone, but Marshals Season 2 is about to confront him with something even more personal: the lasting damage all that darkness has inflicted on his son.

Luke Grimes returns as the rancher-turned-U.S. Marshal in an action-heavy premiere built around a desperate attempt to rescue Tate Dutton, played by Brecken Merrill, following the teenager’s kidnapping in the Season 1 finale.

Helicopters and heavy firepower will be involved.

“Anytime we get a helicopter day, it’s a pretty good day,” Grimes said of filming the premiere.

But beneath the spectacle is a much more painful storyline.

Even if Kayce manages to bring Tate home, rescuing his son physically may prove far easier than helping him recover emotionally.

Season 2 Begins With A Fight To Save Tate

Season 1 ended with wealthy rancher Tom Weaver, played by Chris Mulkey, kidnapping Tate as part of his violent attempt to force Kayce into selling his land.

For Kayce, there is a horrifying sense of history repeating itself.

Tate was kidnapped once before when he was still a child during Yellowstone, meaning this latest ordeal adds another traumatic experience to a life already marked by extraordinary violence.

According to Grimes, those experiences will become central to the new season.

“The big arc this season is Kayce trying to deal with the repercussions of the things Tate has gone through, throughout his life,” he explained.

“No one should have to see that much violence and darkness.”

Kayce will attempt to help his son, but he will not always know how.

“Kayce takes swings at trying to help Tate,” Grimes said. “Sometimes those aren’t the right things. Sometimes those push them apart.”

For the actor, the important part is that Kayce refuses to stop trying.

“I find it inspiring, whether he’s failing or not, he’s really trying, and that’s what it’s all about for him.”

Kayce Has Lost The Dutton Family — But Finds Another One

The rescue also forces Kayce to recognize how much his life has changed since Yellowstone.

He no longer has the enormous Dutton family machine behind him.

“He’s on his own,” Grimes said.

Except, increasingly, he isn’t.

His fellow Marshals begin occupying some of the emotional space once filled by his family.

“His teammates fill in the gaps where his family would’ve before,” Grimes explained.

That bond becomes even stronger following the brutal events of the Season 1 finale.

Belle, played by Arielle Kebbel, and Cal, played by Logan Marshall-Green, were ambushed by Weaver’s men. Both survive, but neither escapes the attack untouched.

They eventually reunite with the rest of the team, including Andrea, played by Ash Santos, and Miles, played by Tatanka Means.

According to Grimes, what happened “drives everyone closer.”

Season 2 Will Dig Deeper Into The Entire Team

With Kayce’s new family taking on greater importance, Season 2 will spend more time exploring the people behind the badges.

“Throughout this season, Kayce has different relationships with every team member in its own way,” Grimes said. “It goes into more of their backstory so the audience can fall in love with them.”

Several personal storylines are already taking shape.

Cal will be dealing with his cancer diagnosis, while Belle faces her gambling problem.

Andrea has to navigate her decision to remain in Montana, and Miles’ relationship with bartender Maddie will receive more attention.

Maddie, played by Morgan Lindholm, is also Cal’s daughter and is set to receive considerably more screen time.

Another addition is assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Burns, played by Marque Richardson.

Together, those stories suggest the second season will expand beyond Kayce’s journey while strengthening the team dynamic at the center of the spinoff.

Rainwater And Mo Remain Part Of Kayce’s Life

Not every important relationship in Kayce’s world comes from his Marshal team.

His ties to Broken Rock remain strong.

Gil Birmingham returns as Chairman Rainwater, while Mo Brings Plenty remains another important presence in Kayce’s life.

Grimes described them as Kayce’s “blood brothers,” and although their scenes are often serious, the atmosphere between the actors away from the cameras is apparently much lighter.

“The scenes of me and Rainwater don’t tend to be very light, but there’s a lot of fun happening behind the scenes,” Grimes said.

“We get along so well. Him and Mo, none of the three of us take ourselves very seriously. We work hard and care about our work, but we don’t let that get in the way of a good time.”

Beth And Rip Won’t Appear — But A Crossover Could Still Happen

One question hanging over every expansion of the Yellowstone universe is when familiar Duttons might cross paths again.

Grimes confirmed that viewers should not expect Beth Dutton or Rip Wheeler to appear in Season 2.

Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser’s characters are instead continuing their story in the Paramount+ drama Dutton Ranch, which follows their life in Texas.

That does not mean Kayce and Beth will remain separated forever.

“It’s not out of the question that we might have some sort of crossover at some point,” Grimes revealed.

And there is a compelling story reason for it.

“Beth’s basically Kayce’s only living family member other than Tate,” he said. “It would make sense that down the line we’d at least talk.”

Even more intriguingly, Grimes and Reilly have already discussed the possibility themselves.

“[Kelly and I have] texted about it back and forth a lot, talked about how it’d be fun and necessary for our story arcs, however they’re going to end.”

Nothing has been confirmed, but the door is clearly open.

Kayce May Finally Be Ready For Love Again

Season 2 could also mark another major emotional change for Kayce.

His wife’s death from cancer left him carrying another enormous loss, but Grimes says enough time has passed that Kayce may finally be capable of considering a future with someone else.

“He’s starting to be open,” Grimes said.

“It’s been long enough that no one would blame him for starting to have those thoughts.”

Any change will happen slowly.

“You’ll see him open up to the idea very, very slowly and very cautiously.”

One person unlikely to become that new love is Dolly, Weaver’s flirtatious daughter, played by Ellyn Jameson.

Her loyalties remain uncertain, and Kayce has reason to question whether she is secretly working with her father.

“Kayce has his doubts about what side she’s on and struggles with that throughout the beginning of the season,” Grimes explained.

As for whether he personally thinks Kayce should pursue her, the actor was considerably less conflicted.

“No matter what side she’s on, I wouldn’t go there ever again, me personally.”

Twenty Episodes Mean Plenty More Action

Season 2 is also significantly expanding Kayce’s story with a 20-episode run.

When Grimes discussed the season, he was approximately halfway through production after three months of filming.

The physical demands were already taking their toll.

“My body reminds me every day,” he joked.

There is plenty of traditional Western action in the mix, including horseback work.

One recent shoot proved especially meaningful because Grimes had just finished reading Larry McMurtry’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Western novel Lonesome Dove.

“I had this feeling of being so lucky to get paid to sit on a horse,” he recalled.

After playing Kayce for so long, the experience gave him something he needed.

“I needed that spark of inspiration after doing this character for so long.”

Kayce Can’t Escape Being A Dutton

Kayce may have moved away from the family structure that defined so much of Yellowstone, but Grimes does not believe his character can ever completely escape where he came from.

The Dutton legacy remains inside him.

“He’s never going to outlive the legacy of who he comes from, a family that are fighters,” Grimes said.

The difference is what Kayce now chooses to do with that instinct.

Instead of fighting primarily to protect the Dutton ranch and his family’s interests, he is channeling it into his work with the Marshals.

“It’s in him whether he likes it or not,” Grimes explained. “He’s using it for something good with this team — helping people and doing good for his community.”

For Grimes, that idea gets to the heart of the spinoff.

“That’s what this show is about.”

Season 2 Pushes Kayce Into A New Era

The upcoming season therefore finds Kayce caught between the man Yellowstone made him and the person he is trying to become.

His son has been kidnapped again.

His new team has been attacked.

Tate is carrying years of trauma.

Kayce is cautiously considering whether there might be room for love after devastating loss.

And somewhere beyond the immediate story, a reunion with his surviving sister remains possible.

There will still be helicopters, horses and plenty of action.

But the bigger battle appears to be happening inside the Dutton family that remains.

Kayce can rescue Tate from his kidnappers.

Season 2 will ask whether he can help his son survive everything that came before them, too.
