3 finalists. £100,000. 30 seconds. And one question that split Europe from America. The US version of The 1% Club left viewers stunned after contestants were faced with a final question so simple that some Europeans wondered how it was even worth 5%. Earlier, players had already been tripped up by questions about a sleeping bat and what appears in a mirror. But the final challenge — involving the time difference between New York and Los Angeles — had viewers asking how anyone could possibly get it wrong. Some insisted the questions were “far too easy,” while others admitted the 50% question had fooled them too.

The 1% Club US Leaves Viewers Baffled as ‘Too Easy’ Questions Spark European Debate

The US version of The 1% Club has left viewers questioning whether some of its supposedly difficult questions are actually far easier than they appear.

The reaction intensified during Season 1, Episode 11, when contestants were faced with a series of questions that many viewers felt were surprisingly straightforward. The final question, in particular, became the biggest talking point, with some Europeans joking that perhaps they simply approach these puzzles differently.

The opening question already had viewers confused

Early in the episode, contestants were asked: “Which of these heavy sleepers has had their picture turned upside down?”

Three images were shown: a koala sleeping in a tree, a red panther lying on a branch, and a bat shown upright.

The answer was the bat, since bats normally sleep upside down. Yet some contestants still managed to choose incorrectly, leaving viewers stunned by how easily the question had caught people out.

One commenter even joked about whether the contestants who missed the question would be able to vote in the upcoming election.

But that was only the beginning.

The 50% question divided viewers again

Later, the show presented a 50% question asking contestants what a person would see if they looked in a mirror.

The panel was shown an original image of a girl holding a sunflower above her head, alongside several altered or inverted versions.

Although the concept appeared simple, a number of contestants selected the wrong answer.

That prompted one viewer to write that the questions were so easy they could tell it was an American quiz, while another said they had answered them all correctly and wondered whether “maybe in Europe we are different.”

Not everyone agreed, however. Another viewer admitted they had been doing well until the 50% question eventually caught them out.

Then came the 5% question

The biggest reaction arrived at the very end.

The remaining contestants, Jared and Steve, were asked to work out the time in Los Angeles when it was 4 a.m. in New York on March 12, 2023.

The question explained that the Pacific Time Zone was three hours behind the Eastern Time Zone, while Daylight Saving Time had moved the clocks forward by one hour at 2 a.m. that day.

The answer was midnight, and both Jared and Steve made it through to become the final two contestants.

Yet instead of celebrating the difficulty of the question, viewers were left questioning why it had been designated a 5% question.

One commenter broke down the calculation, arguing that the question had essentially supplied everything needed: the normal three-hour difference, plus the one-hour Daylight Saving Time adjustment, making the four-hour difference straightforward to calculate.

For many viewers, the debate wasn’t really about whether the contestants could solve the questions. It was about whether the difficulty ratings on the US version of The 1% Club accurately reflected how challenging they actually were.

And judging by the reaction, some viewers on the other side of the Atlantic remain convinced they would have had a much easier time with this particular episode.
