Inside Tim Curry’s Years-Long Health Battle Before His Death at 80 — From a Major Stroke to Learning to Speak Again

Tim Curry spent more than a decade adapting to serious health challenges after a major stroke dramatically changed his life in 2012.

The acclaimed actor, known for unforgettable performances in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, It, Clue and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, died peacefully at his home in Toluca Lake, Los Angeles, on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2026. He was 80.

In the years before his death, Curry spoke candidly about the stroke that left him with lasting mobility problems, affected his memory and forced him through an intensive rehabilitation process that included learning how to speak clearly again.

Tim Curry suffered a major stroke in 2012

Curry’s medical crisis began while he was receiving a massage in 2012.

Despite the seriousness of what was happening, the actor later admitted he did not initially realize he was experiencing a stroke.

“I felt fine. I had no symptoms that I was aware of. I wasn’t in pain,” he recalled during an October 2025 interview with CBS Sunday Morning.

His massage therapist, however, recognized that something was wrong and called emergency services.

Doctors subsequently discovered two blood clots in Curry’s brain, leading to invasive brain surgery.

The stroke left him with paralysis and significant problems affecting the left side of his body. Curry later relied on a wheelchair and continued to experience difficulties with movement in his left arm and leg.

His short-term memory was also affected.

He had to learn how to speak again

One of the most difficult consequences of the stroke involved Curry’s ability to communicate.

Following surgery, he entered rehabilitation and had to work on speaking again.

For an actor whose career had been built around distinctive dialogue, vocal performances and stage work, that loss was especially frustrating.

Curry told CBS Sunday Morning that he “hated” being unable to speak.

“I love words. I love to communicate,” he said.

Over time, he worked to regain his speech while also adjusting to the physical limitations that remained after the stroke.

The experience ultimately changed the direction of his career. Although Curry continued acting, he increasingly focused on voiceover work, which allowed him to remain professionally active despite his mobility issues.

Years later, Curry was still unable to walk

The effects of the stroke remained significant more than a decade later.

At a 50th-anniversary screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show in 2025, Curry gave audiences a candid update on his condition.

“I still can’t walk, which is why I’m in this silly chair,” he said, referring to his wheelchair.

“That’s very limiting,” he continued. “So I won’t be singing and I won’t be dancing very soon. I still have real problems with my left leg.”

Despite those limitations, Curry continued making public appearances and remained connected to the film that had defined much of his career.

He had also returned to the Rocky Horror universe in 2016, appearing as the Criminologist Narrator in The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do the Time Warp Again.

His health battle also reminded him of his father

Curry’s stroke carried another deeply personal connection.

His father had also suffered a stroke before his death in 1958.

In later interviews, Curry said he thought of his father immediately after his own medical emergency because he understood that strokes could be fatal.

That knowledge made the experience frightening, even if Curry later became known for approaching his condition with characteristic humor and resilience.

He also said that he did not have much admiration for self-pity, an attitude he credited to his mother.

That outlook appeared to shape the way he handled the years of rehabilitation and reduced mobility that followed.

Curry died peacefully at his Los Angeles home

Curry’s representative confirmed that the actor died late Tuesday night.

“Tim Curry, the iconic actor and entertainer globally beloved for his dynamic contributions to the stage and screen, passed away peacefully at his home in Toluca Lake, Los Angeles, on Aug. 25, 2026,” a statement from longtime manager and friend Marcia Hurwitz said.

The statement continued by remembering qualities that extended beyond Curry’s famous characters.

“Though widely known for his inimitable, flamboyant characters and colorful stage performances, his greatest legacies to those who knew him were his curious, expansive mind and generous, gentle heart, both of which remained open and filled with anticipation until his final breath.”

Law enforcement sources said no foul play was suspected.

The Los Angeles Fire Department also said emergency responders were called to Curry’s home for a medical event late Tuesday night and found a deceased man at the scene.

He had spoken openly about death before his passing

In one of his final interviews, Curry also reflected on mortality with the same matter-of-fact humor he often brought to discussions of his health.

Speaking on CBS Sunday Morning, the actor said he did not fear death.

He joked that it might eventually be “very comforting to go bye-bye,” before clarifying that he was not actively rushing toward it.

“I want to earn it,” Curry said. “I want to earn the privilege of not being here.”

He added that when the time eventually came, he believed he “might very well embrace it.”

At the same time, Curry emphasized that he still intended to avoid death for as long as possible and was “not galloping toward it.”

His career continued despite the stroke

Although the 2012 medical emergency permanently changed Curry’s physical life, it did not completely end his career.

The actor continued performing through voice roles and occasional screen appearances, maintaining a connection with audiences who had followed him across generations.

His credits stretched from the flamboyant Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show to the terrifying Pennywise in It, the quick-witted Wadsworth in Clue and the memorable hotel concierge in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.

Even after losing the ability to walk, Curry continued appearing publicly and speaking openly about what surviving the stroke had required from him.

His final years therefore became not only a continuation of an extraordinary entertainment career, but also a long period of adaptation to a life that had changed almost overnight.

Curry never married and had no children.

He leaves behind decades of stage and screen performances — as well as a later chapter defined by persistence, humor and an unusually candid willingness to speak about the health struggles that reshaped his life.
