Buckingham Palace found a uniquely fitting way to remember Dolly Parton, turning one of Britain’s most recognisable royal traditions into an emotional musical tribute to the late country icon.

During the Changing the Guard ceremony on Wednesday morning, just one day after Parton’s death at the age of 80, the military band performed one of her most famous songs, “9 to 5,” outside Buckingham Palace.

The moment was later shared by King Charles and Queen Camilla through the Royal Family’s official social media account, accompanied by a message remembering the singer not only for her music, but for the enormous impact of her charitable work.

It was an unexpected tribute thousands of miles from Parton’s Tennessee roots — and one that quickly left fans emotional.

The tribute unfolded during the traditional Changing the Guard ceremony, where members of the Coldstream Guards and Welsh Guards performed Parton’s instantly recognisable 1980 hit.

Footage showed the military musicians playing the song in front of Buckingham Palace as crowds watched.

For a singer whose career crossed generations and genres, the choice carried an unmistakable sense of celebration rather than simply mourning.

The Royal Family later shared footage of the performance online.

“Remembering the late, great Dolly, who brought joy, comfort and inspiration to so many,” the accompanying message read.

The tribute also highlighted Parton’s work through her Imagination Library, which has provided free books to millions of children.

The royal message ended with a subtle nod to another of her most famous songs: “We will always love you.”

Fans Were Deeply Moved By The Royal Gesture

Reaction to the tribute was immediate.

Social media users praised the performance as a touching and unexpected way to honour Parton, with some describing the moment as “perfect” and others saying it brought them to tears.

The setting made the gesture especially striking.

Changing the Guard is one of the monarchy’s most famous ceremonial traditions, normally associated with royal pageantry and military precision.

On Wednesday, however, the familiar ceremony briefly became a celebration of a woman whose influence extended far beyond country music.

Parton died Tuesday at the age of 80.

Her nephew first announced her passing in an emotional video, while her representatives later confirmed that the singer had been dealing with a brief battle with cancer.

According to the statement released after her death, Parton was surrounded by loved ones at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center.

The family remembered her as someone who spent her extraordinary life bringing “joy, laughter, hope and integrity” into everything she touched.

They also pointed to the generosity that became almost as central to Parton’s legacy as her music.

Over decades, she quietly supported educational programs, disaster relief efforts and numerous charitable causes.

Perhaps none became more closely associated with her than the Imagination Library.

Have your say.

Founded by Parton in 1995, the Imagination Library grew from a local literacy program in Tennessee into an international initiative providing books to children.

That work received special recognition in Buckingham Palace’s tribute.

The Royal Family’s decision to highlight the program underscored something that friends, fans and fellow performers have repeatedly emphasised since Parton’s passing: her legacy cannot be measured solely by hit records.

Parton became one of the most recognisable entertainers in American music, but she also used her success to support causes that often had little connection to the spotlight.

The Royal Family’s message specifically remembered the “millions of children given free books through her Imagination Library.”

Her Final Years Were Marked By Personal Loss

Parton’s death came after an extraordinarily difficult period in her personal life.

Her husband, Carl Thomas Dean, died in March 2025 at the age of 82 following a prolonged illness.

The couple had been together for nearly six decades.

Parton later spoke publicly about how difficult it was learning to live without the man who had been beside her for most of her adult life.

She told Entertainment Tonight in May 2025 that she expected to miss Dean “for the rest of my life.”

“I’m having to really go through a lot trying to figure out how to be without him because I was with him for so long,” she said.

Parton would later acknowledge that caring for Dean had caused her to put some of her own health concerns aside.

Dolly Had Previously Spoken About Her Health

In the period before her death, Parton had reduced some of her public commitments.

She previously referenced “health challenges” while postponing appearances but did not initially reveal the full extent of what she was experiencing.

In one of her final interviews, she explained that she had been dealing with health issues she had neglected while concentrating on her husband.

The admission took on greater significance following confirmation that she had been facing cancer before her death.

Despite those difficulties, accounts of some of her final public appearances described Parton as upbeat and engaged.

That mixture of resilience, humour and determination had been a recurring theme throughout her career.

A Career That Reached Far Beyond Country Music

Parton’s influence extended across music, film, television, philanthropy and popular culture.

Songs including “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You” became part of the American musical canon.

Her songwriting earned admiration across generations, while her unmistakable personality allowed her to move comfortably between traditional country audiences and mainstream pop culture.

She also remained unusually skilled at laughing at her own image while maintaining complete control over it.

But perhaps the clearest measure of her reach came in the extraordinary range of tributes that followed her death.

Musicians, actors, television personalities, longtime collaborators and public figures around the world remembered her.

Then Buckingham Palace added its own farewell.

From Tennessee To Buckingham Palace

There was something especially poignant about hearing “9 to 5” performed by a British military band outside Buckingham Palace.

Parton built her career singing about ordinary people, hard work, heartbreak, faith and perseverance.

Yet decades later, those songs had travelled far enough to be performed inside one of the world’s most famous royal traditions.

The moment lasted only a few minutes.

But it captured the extraordinary reach of a career that began in rural Tennessee and ultimately touched people across the world.

One day after Dolly Parton’s passing, Buckingham Palace did not simply issue a formal statement. The music played instead — and as “9 to 5” rang out during Changing the Guard, Britain’s Royal Family offered one final, unmistakably Dolly farewell: “We will always love you.”
