21 Contestants Were Knocked Out By A Question That Should Have Been One Of The Easier Ones On The 1% Club. Six Simple Words. Three Possible Answers. And Yet 21 Players Still Fell Into The Same Trap. The answer was hiding in the relationship between the words — something viewers at home struggled to spot too. Once Lee Mack explained the logic, it suddenly seemed obvious. Could You Have Got It?

The 1% Club’s “easy” 70% question left 21 contestants eliminated

A question that should have been one of the easier hurdles on The 1% Club instead caused a major shake-up, with 21 contestants eliminated after failing to spot a simple pattern.

The Lee Mack-fronted quiz show begins with 100 contestants and gradually narrows the field through questions designed to test logic and common sense rather than general knowledge. The difficulty eventually builds toward the final question, which is intended to be solvable by just 1% of the population.

But on an episode that aired in October, it was the 70% question that proved unexpectedly difficult for a large number of players — and viewers watching at home were left struggling with it too.

Could you spot the pattern?

A quiz show screen displaying a question: "What replaces the question mark in this sequence? Hot Hard Small Cold Easy ?", with answer options A) Big, B) Fast, and C) Slow.

Contestants were shown a short sequence and asked:

“What replaces the question mark in this sentence?”

The sequence read:

Hot Hard Small Cold Easy ?

They had three possible answers to choose from:

  • A: Big
  • B: Fast
  • C: Slow

Although the question was positioned at the 70% stage, where contestants would generally expect a relatively straightforward challenge, 21 people failed to give the correct answer.

That meant a surprisingly large group of contestants were eliminated from the game at a point that normally causes far fewer casualties.

As the eliminated players’ seats turned blue to indicate they were out, Lee Mack joked: “Wow. There are now more blue people than a Smurf convention.”

The answer was hiding in the opposites

For viewers still trying to solve the puzzle, the key was to look at the relationship between the words rather than treating the sequence as a conventional trivia question.

The words formed pairs of opposites:

Hot / Cold

Hard / Easy

That left Small / Big.

So the correct answer was A: Big.

Explaining the solution, Lee said: “The words all have an opposite within the sequence. Hot/Cold and Hard/Easy. Big replaces the question mark as the opposite of small.”

The simplicity of the explanation made the result even more surprising, particularly given how many contestants had failed to identify the pattern within the time allowed.

Viewers were stumped too

An illustration of a word puzzle where "Big" is the correct answer to replace the question mark, explaining that all words in the sequence have an opposite.

The difficulty was not limited to those in the studio. Many viewers attempting the question from home were also left scratching their heads before the answer was revealed.

It was another example of how The 1% Club can turn an apparently basic question into a test of observation and lateral thinking.

The show has seen similar surprises in earlier episodes. During its Christmas special, more than a quarter of the contestants were eliminated by the 80% question, despite that stage normally being aimed at a much wider proportion of the population.

Meanwhile, with a new season airing, the format was also set to return with two special editions. A Valentine’s special was scheduled for later in the month, while the show’s first-ever kids’ version was also set to air.

The 1% Club airs on Saturday nights on ITV.
