The 1% Club wipes out 32 contestants with a deceptively simple family question
A seemingly straightforward family question sent 32 contestants crashing out of The 1% Club, leaving host Lee Mack stunned by the number of players who failed to find the answer.
The ITV quiz show sees 100 contestants compete for the chance to win up to £100,000, with players having to survive a series of increasingly challenging questions.
But for 32 contestants, their run came to an abrupt end on the 40% question.
One family question catches out 32 players
Lee Mack asked the remaining contestants to identify which of three situations would be impossible.
The options were:
- Marry your cousin’s cousin
- Marry your brother’s widow
- Marry your widow’s sister
Players had just 30 seconds to decide which statement could not be true.
When the time was up, Lee was visibly surprised by the number of contestants who had got it wrong.
“Wow! That is massive!” he said. “32 people went out on that one. Let’s have a look at the answer.”
The correct answer was marrying your widow’s sister.
The answer was hiding in one word
The explanation was surprisingly simple: you cannot marry your own widow’s sister because having a widow means that you would already be dead.
As the audience reacted, Lee added another joke: “And before we get any complaints, yes, I accept that is a bit Zombie-ist!”
The question proved costly for a huge number of contestants, while those who answered correctly were able to continue towards the later stages of the game.
With 32 players eliminated, the prize fund rose to £90,000 as the show moved into the 35% question.
