The 1% Club carnage as 37 players are caught out by ‘language’ question – but the answer requires NO foreign language knowledge

THE 1% Club descended into chaos when a seemingly intimidating language puzzle left a staggering 37 contestants in trouble.

The hit ITV quiz, hosted by Lee Mack, starts with 100 hopefuls battling through a series of increasingly difficult puzzles in the hope of reaching the coveted 1% question and taking home a share of the jackpot.

Unlike traditional quiz shows, contestants don’t need encyclopedic general knowledge. Instead, they must rely on logic, reasoning and common sense – all while racing against a brutal 30-second clock.

But one question proved particularly destructive.

MASS WIPEOUT

During the 45% round, Lee presented contestants with what appeared to be a foreign-language challenge.

Players were shown the numbers One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven and Eight, followed by three possible translations labelled A, B and C.

They were then asked to identify which option was NOT a correct translation.

At first glance, it appeared contestants might need some impressive language skills to survive.

Lee even joked: “Foreign language questions – you don’t get this on Saturday Night Take Away.”

But there was a major catch.

When the 30 seconds expired, Lee revealed the extraordinary damage.

A whopping 20 contestants had answered incorrectly and were immediately eliminated, while another 17 had been forced to use their passes.

Gasps could be heard around the studio as the scale of the wipeout became clear.

That meant 37 players had been caught out by a single 45% question.

HIDDEN TRICK

But the biggest shock came when Lee explained the solution.

The correct option was C – and contestants didn’t actually need to understand the foreign language at all.

Instead, they simply needed to count.

Lee explained that while the English sequence contained eight numbers, option C contained only seven translations.

The intimidating language element had effectively been a distraction from an incredibly simple visual clue hiding in plain sight.

The reveal made the mass failure even more painful for those who had overthought the puzzle.

Lee then turned his attention to eliminated contestant Scott, whose lucky glove puppet mascot clearly hadn’t brought him much luck.

Scott threw the puppet towards the stage, prompting Lee to put it on and joke with the audience before eventually returning it.

Scott admitted he’d initially selected another option before realising too late that C contained the crucial clue.

It was another savage reminder of what makes The 1% Club so unpredictable: sometimes the questions that look the most complicated require the simplest possible thinking.

And for 20 eliminated contestants and 17 players forced to burn their passes, that realization came just a few seconds too late.
