Florence Pugh Leads Netflix’s East of Eden, a Powerful Family Saga About Good, Evil and the Choices That Define Us
Florence Pugh takes on one of literature’s most complex and unsettling characters in Netflix’s new adaptation of East of Eden, bringing John Steinbeck’s celebrated novel to the screen in a seven-episode limited series created by Zoe Kazan.
Pugh stars as Cathy Ames, a woman whose life becomes deeply entangled with the Trask family across generations. At the centre of the story are brothers Adam Trask, played by Christopher Abbott, and Charles Trask, portrayed by Mike Faist, whose lives unfold against the darker side of the American dream.
The series explores the enduring struggle between good and evil, examining how family history, personal decisions and hidden darkness shape the lives of those who come after us.

Florence Pugh Takes on the Complex Cathy Ames
In the series, Cathy reflects on a childhood desire to disappear, believing that becoming small enough might allow her to escape the bad things in the world.
Her explanation is stark: “Because the world is so full of evil.”
That sense of fear and darkness lies at the heart of Kazan’s interpretation of Steinbeck’s 1952 novel. Rather than simply recounting a family’s history, the adaptation examines the choices people make, the consequences they leave behind and the complicated relationship between human nature and morality.
Kazan, whose previous work includes The Plot Against America and The Deuce, said Steinbeck’s writing has captivated her since she first encountered the book as a young teenager. She described the author’s work as personal, shocking, profound and free, and said bringing the family saga to life had been a deeply resonant experience.
The result is a period drama that follows one family while also reflecting a society undergoing profound change.

A Story That Spans Generations
The seven episodes follow the Trask family across decades, with the narrative stretching from the aftermath of the American Civil War to the eve of World War I. Their story is set against a changing America, where ambition, loyalty and family tensions can have consequences that last for generations.
The wider cast includes several characters whose lives intersect with the Trasks:
- Ciarán Hinds as Samuel Hamilton, an Irish immigrant who settles in California, raises a family and develops a deep understanding of the land.
- Hoon Lee as Lee, a Chinese American whose intelligence is matched by his compassion for others.
- Martha Plimpton as Faye, a brothel owner whose generous nature may ultimately leave her vulnerable.
- Tracy Letts as Cyrus Trask, the family patriarch.
- Joseph Zada as Cal Trask and Joe Anders as Aron Trask, the next generation of the Trask family.
Together, these characters broaden the story beyond the central family, revealing a society in which people must navigate difficult choices and live with the consequences.

Behind the Netflix Adaptation
Zoe Kazan wrote the series and serves as executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Jeb Stuart, whose previous credits include Vikings: Valhalla, The Fugitive and Liberator.
Direction is shared between Garth Davis, known for Lion and Mary Magdalene, who helmed the first four episodes, and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, whose work includes The Mustang, Lady Chatterley’s Lover and The Act, who directed the final three.
Kazan has described working on the adaptation as a great joy, praising the cast and crew assembled to bring Steinbeck’s novel to life. The project also carries a personal connection to her family: her grandfather, filmmaker Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 film adaptation starring James Dean.
