Omar Sy Promises a Bigger, Bolder Lupin Season 4 as Netflix’s Hit French Thriller Prepares to Return
After a three-year wait since Part 3, Lupin is preparing for its next chapter, with Omar Sy promising a more ambitious season featuring bigger action sequences, deeper drama and a formidable new rival.
The French actor returns as Assane Diop, the charismatic gentleman thief whose talent for disguises, elaborate schemes and unexpected escapes has helped turn the Netflix series into a global hit. Part 4 is set to premiere on October 23, bringing back familiar faces while placing Assane in a dangerous new situation that threatens both his freedom and his reputation.
This time, Sy has an even greater creative role behind the scenes. Alongside his starring performance, he co-produces the new season through Carrousel Studios, the production company he launched in 2024, and steps up from producer to co-showrunner alongside Louis Leterrier.
Produced by Gaumont in collaboration with Carrousel, the latest instalment aims to preserve the elements that made Lupin popular while pushing its scale and storytelling further.

Assane Diop Faces a New Mystery
The new season reunites Assane with his family, friends and police adversaries, but their relationships unfold against a fresh set of circumstances.
According to Netflix’s synopsis, four years after the events of Part 3, Assane remains in prison. He has put his alter ego, Lupin, aside and wants to serve his sentence, keeping a promise to his son that they will visit their family in Senegal.
His plans collapse when a mysterious message signed “Lupin” announces a series of simultaneous museum robberies. Despite heightened security, the thefts succeed, and evidence points directly towards Assane.
A surveillance camera appears to place him inside one of the museums during a robbery that leaves Captain Belkacem seriously injured. With his innocence in question, Assane must escape custody, uncover the identity of the copycat and become Lupin once again.
The premise brings the series back to its signature blend of elaborate heists, deception and mystery, while raising the stakes for its central character.

Since its debut, Lupin has become one of Netflix’s most successful non-English-language productions.
The first two seasons rank among the platform’s most popular non-English series, at No. 5 and No. 9 respectively. The show has also reached Netflix’s Top 10 in more than 90 countries, demonstrating the international appeal of its French setting and central character.
Its impact extends beyond streaming figures. According to Netflix, the first three seasons contributed more than €90 million, or approximately $100 million, to the French economy.
For Sy, the series has also helped introduce a classic French literary figure to a new generation of viewers around the world.
Omar Sy Explains How Season 4 Raises the Stakes
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sy discussed the challenge of returning to a successful series after several years away.
The creative team wanted to retain the qualities audiences had embraced while introducing fresh adventures and unexpected developments. Because surprises are central to Lupin, finding the right balance between familiarity and innovation took time.
That approach has shaped the new season’s more ambitious style.
Sy welcomed the suggestion that Part 4 feels closer to a blockbuster, explaining that the team deliberately sought to increase the production value and take both the action and drama further.
The new season also introduces a more formidable antagonist. According to Sy, the rival is stronger and smarter, forcing the established characters into more complicated situations.
The aim was to push the story and its characters beyond what viewers have seen before, rather than simply repeat the formula of earlier seasons.

Familiar Faces Return in New Circumstances
Although the scale is increasing, the series is not abandoning the relationships that helped establish its appeal.
Sy said the creative team wanted to bring back the family, friends and police characters audiences already know, while placing them in different circumstances that could reveal new sides of their personalities.
Returning cast members include Ludivine Sagnier, Antoine Gouy, Soufiane Guerrab and Shirine Boutella. Théo Christine also returns as Assane’s son Raoul, who is now older, alongside Laïka Blanc-Francard.
The story will also revisit familiar adversaries, including Pellegrini.
For Sy, keeping these characters involved was an important part of moving the series forward. The intention was to make the new season bigger and more surprising without losing the family dynamics and ensemble relationships that viewers have come to appreciate.
He also revealed that the action begins at an intense pace. The team wanted the opening minutes to deliver major events almost immediately, establishing a high level of tension and then exploring where the story could go from there.

Why Assane Diop Remains Such a Special Role
Playing Assane continues to be one of the most enjoyable parts of Sy’s work as an actor.
He has described the character as his “best toy”, reflecting the freedom the role gives him to move between different styles of performance.
Within a single series, Sy must handle physical action, emotional drama and moments of comedy. Bringing those elements together through one character is unusual, he explained, and a major reason the role remains so appealing.
That versatility has become central to Lupin. Assane can be a calculated strategist in one moment and a vulnerable father in the next, with the story constantly shifting between danger, humour and personal relationships.
The fourth season gives Sy another opportunity to explore that range while placing his character under greater pressure.
How Lupin Revived a French Literary Icon
Long before the Netflix series, Arsène Lupin was already a familiar figure in France through Maurice Leblanc’s books, as well as earlier television and film adaptations.
Sy said the character was part of the cultural landscape he grew up with. When the creative team brought Lupin back for a modern audience, however, the original stories had become less prominent for many younger viewers.
The series helped change that. Following its launch, children began returning to Leblanc’s books, and the publisher expressed its appreciation that the stories had found new readers. At the same time, international audiences were discovering the character for the first time.
For Sy and the wider team, seeing a beloved French figure connect with viewers around the world has been a source of considerable pride.
The success demonstrates how a character rooted in French literary history can reach a global audience when reimagined for contemporary television.
A Physically Demanding Season for the Cast

The ambitious production also came with considerable challenges behind the scenes.
Sy described filming Part 4 as particularly intense. Unlike the usual production schedule, the team continued shooting without a break because he had other commitments to fulfil afterwards.
The demanding timetable was made more difficult by the season’s extensive action sequences, which required a significant physical effort from the cast.
Despite the strain, Sy said the team was proud of what it had accomplished. Although the production proved difficult at times, he believes the finished season reflects the effort invested in taking the series to another level.
What Can Fans Expect From Lupin Part 4?
Sy remained tight-lipped about the season’s biggest twists, declining to reveal details that could spoil the experience for viewers. He did, however, promise a combination of familiar elements, unexpected turns and plenty of entertainment.
With Assane facing a copycat who appears to be using his identity, the new episodes will test his ability to outmanoeuvre his enemies while protecting his own reputation.
The return of the central cast, a more dangerous antagonist and the creative team’s ambition to expand the action and drama all point towards a significant new chapter for the series.
Lupin Part 4 premieres on Netflix on October 23. After years away, Omar Sy is ready to bring Assane Diop back into the spotlight — and this time, the stakes are higher than ever.
