Netflix’s Small-Town Crime Drama Is Hiding A Seriously Dark Mystery… Murder In A Small Town Brings Together Two Seasons Of Murders, Suspicious Locals And Twists That Turn A Picturesque Coastal Escape Into A Dangerous Investigation. Rossif Sutherland stars as a police chief who moves to Gibsons, British Columbia, hoping to leave big-city violence behind — only to find himself facing a disturbing string of killings. With Kristin Kreuk, a growing list of suspects and secrets buried beneath the town’s peaceful image, every new case threatens to make Karl Alberg’s fresh start even more complicated. A quiet town. A determined detective. And a mystery that keeps getting darker.

Murder in a Small Town: A Big-City Detective Faces Dark Secrets in a Seemingly Peaceful Coastal Community

Rossif Sutherland and Kristin Kreuk lead a Canadian crime drama where picturesque surroundings conceal a growing number of murders, complicated relationships and secrets that refuse to stay buried.

Moving to a quiet seaside town might seem like the perfect way to escape the pressures of big-city policing. For Karl Alberg, however, the change of scenery brings an entirely different set of challenges.

In Murder in a Small Town, police chief Karl Alberg, played by Rossif Sutherland, relocates from Minneapolis to Gibsons, British Columbia, hoping to leave behind the violence and strain of his previous career. Instead, he finds himself investigating a troubling series of murders in a community that proves far more complicated than its idyllic appearance suggests.

Alongside the investigations, Karl begins building a relationship with Cassandra Lee (Kristin Kreuk), a local librarian whose connection to the town adds another dimension to his new life.

Now streaming on Netflix, the two-season crime drama combines character-driven storytelling, small-town intrigue and murder mysteries set against the atmosphere of Canada’s Pacific coast. The series is adapted from L.R. Wright’s nine-book Alberg and Cassandra mystery collection.

Meet the Cast of Murder in a Small Town

Rossif Sutherland leads the series as Karl Alberg, an experienced detective whose instincts remain essential as he adjusts to policing a smaller community. Kristin Kreuk plays Cassandra Lee, the librarian who becomes both his romantic interest and an important part of his life in Gibsons.

The main cast also includes:

  • Mya Lowe as Corporal Edwina Yen, a capable officer whose reputation precedes her.
  • Aaron Douglas as Sergeant Sid Sokolowski, a dedicated member of the local police force.
  • Fritzy-Klevans Destine as Andy Kendrick, a young officer still learning how to navigate the demands of the job.
  • Savonna Spracklin as Isabella Harbud, the sharp-witted receptionist who helps keep the police station running smoothly.
  • Bethany Brown as Laila Jackson.
  • Marcia Gay Harden as Mayor Christie Holman, a prominent local figure whose influence complicates matters for Karl and Cassandra.

The series also features an impressive roster of guest performers, including James Cromwell, Devon Sawa, Erica Durance, Tyler Posey, Noah Reid and Malcolm-Jamal Warner.

What Is Murder in a Small Town About?

Karl’s new beginning gets off to an awkward start. Recently divorced and the father of two college-aged daughters, Steph (Cassandra Sawtell) and Holly (Dakota Guppy), he is also navigating the unfamiliar social landscape of his new home.

His first meeting with Cassandra, arranged through a dating app, leads to coffee and the possibility of romance. She recognises that dating options in a small town can be limited, but Karl’s intensity and obvious dedication to his work make him stand out.

His professional responsibilities, however, soon take priority. Gibsons has been experiencing an unusual run of murders, and Karl must determine whether the seemingly unrelated crimes point to something more troubling beneath the town’s peaceful exterior.

A Murder Investigation Raises Difficult Questions

Murder in a Small Town: Release Date, Cast and Plot

One of the cases centres on Carlyle Burke (R.H. Thomson), who is found bludgeoned to death in his home. Karl quickly turns his attention to Burke’s estranged brother-in-law, George Wilcox (James Cromwell), suspecting that tensions within the family may have played a role in the killing.

Cassandra believes George is harmless, but Karl is reluctant to abandon his theory. His determination to uncover the truth puts his investigative instincts at the centre of a case shaped by personal relationships and conflicting perceptions.

He does not have to work alone. His team includes Edwina Yen, a newly hired corporal whose reputation includes taking down a cartel in Philadelphia; Sid Sokolowski, an experienced sergeant committed to public service; Andy Kendrick, an inexperienced officer with promise but a tendency to struggle with professional boundaries; and Isabella Harbud, whose intelligence and organisational skills make her an indispensable presence at the station.

Together, they must contend with a growing workload and the limitations of a small police department. Karl’s experience in a major city may give the team an advantage, but the cases confronting them are anything but routine.

Romance Amid the Murders

While Karl works to understand the criminal activity surrounding him, his relationship with Cassandra offers the possibility of a more settled personal life.

Their connection develops alongside the investigations rather than apart from them. Cassandra’s established ties to Gibsons contrast with Karl’s status as an outsider, creating an additional layer of complexity as he attempts to balance his professional responsibilities with the prospect of a new relationship.

His family life also remains part of the equation. With two daughters and the challenges of starting over after divorce, Karl must find a way to build a future in Gibsons while confronting the demands of a job that rarely gives him time to step back.

The result is a crime drama that places personal relationships alongside its central mysteries, giving the characters lives beyond the cases they investigate.

Is Murder in a Small Town Based on a Book?

Yes. The series is based on the Alberg and Cassandra mysteries by Canadian author L.R. Wright, a nine-book collection featuring detective Karl Alberg.

The novels provide the foundation for the show’s combination of murder investigations, community tensions and the evolving relationship between Karl and Cassandra. The television adaptation brings those elements to a coastal British Columbia setting, where the beauty of the landscape contrasts with the darker realities of the crimes.

The series is produced by Sepia Films in association with FOX Entertainment and Future Shack Entertainment, with Ian Weir serving as showrunner.

Will There Be a Season 3?

The story is set to continue. FOX renewed Murder in a Small Town for a third season on May 7, 2026, and announced that Peter Gallagher would join the cast as Rod Finlayson.

Described as charismatic, independent and capable but unreliable, Rod arrives at the Gibsons marina aboard his beloved boat, setting the stage for upheaval in the lives of Karl and Cassandra.

The renewal followed an improvement in the second season’s seven-day multiplatform audience, which increased by 11% compared with the first season.

With its mix of murder investigations, understated romance and secrets hidden beneath a tranquil coastal setting, Murder in a Small Town offers a different take on the crime drama. Gibsons may look like an escape from the pressures of city life, but for Karl Alberg, the next mystery is never far away.
