One sequence. Three unexpected clues. And one Stoke-on-Trent detail that had Only Connect viewers paying close attention. Contestants were shown Jerusalem’s quarters, Pensacola’s flags and Stoke-on-Trent’s towns — but the real challenge was figuring out the numbers hiding behind each clue. The pattern was 4, 5, 6, with the next answer needing to make seven. Alice suggested Snow White’s dwarves, while George spotted a more fitting geographical connection with Rome’s hills. But the question that really caught attention was: why does Stoke-on-Trent have six towns? The answer reveals a fascinating quirk of the city.

Stoke-on-Trent becomes the unlikely star of Only Connect after viewers spot a familiar name

A question about Stoke-on-Trent left its mark on Monday night’s episode of Only Connect, after the Staffordshire city appeared as one of the clues in the show’s notoriously tricky sequences round.

The BBC quiz, hosted by Victoria Coren Mitchell, is built around finding connections between seemingly unrelated clues. BBC descriptions of the programme similarly define it as a quiz where contestants must draw links between things that initially appear random.

This time, however, viewers in The Potteries had a particularly personal reason to pay attention.

Can you spot the connection?

During the episode, the Godyn family — Charles, Alice and George — faced the Woolgatherers in the sequence round.

Their first three clues were:

  • Jerusalem’s quarters
  • Pensacola’s flags
  • Stoke-on-Trent’s towns

The challenge was to work out what connected the numbers represented by each clue and determine what should come next.

Alice quickly suggested Snow White’s dwarves, giving the sequence a value of seven. Victoria Coren Mitchell accepted the answer, but George then offered a more geographically consistent possibility: Rome’s hills.

That completed the numerical pattern:

4 → 5 → 6 → 7

But the Stoke-on-Trent clue was the one that caught attention.

Why does Stoke-on-Trent have six towns?

The answer lies in the unusual history of the city.

As Victoria explained on the show, Stoke-on-Trent is unique among British cities in being a federation of six towns.

Those six towns are Burslem, Fenton, Hanley, Longton, Stoke-upon-Trent and Tunstall, according to Stoke-on-Trent City Council.

The six towns were united under a single local authority in 1910, while Stoke-on-Trent received city status in 1925. The city council also describes it as the centre of The Potteries, reflecting the area’s long association with pottery production.

So while “Stoke-on-Trent’s towns” might initially look like a fairly obscure clue, it was actually the key to the number six in the sequence.

And for viewers familiar with Stoke-on-Trent, seeing the city’s name appear on Only Connect may have been an especially satisfying moment — provided they managed to work out the connection before the contestants did.
