Finally Revealing the Little-Known Reason for Her Tragic Breakup With Bee Gee Icon Maurice Gibb, Lulu Let Out a Longing Sigh. Young People, Celebrity, and Obstacles They Couldn’t Escape Caused the Fissures To Widen Beneath the Glitz and Shine of Their Love, Which Was a Frenzy of Passion and Music. “We Were Mad About Each Other,” She Admitted, Her Voice Laced With Both Love and Regret, “But Sometimes Love Isn’t Enough.” Though Their Marriage Faded, the Bond Remained, a Bittersweet Melody Echoing Through Time, Forever Etched in Their Hearts.

Sixties pop icon Lulu has told how she had to dump Bee Gee ex-husband Maurice Gibb over his heavy drinking.

The celebrity couple wed in 1969 after a whirlwind affair, then split just four years later when Maurice’s rock and roll lifestyle started to take its toll.

Now, 39 years on, Lulu has admitted they should never have got married in the first place.

She and Maurice met backstage at Top of the Pops. She was 20, he was 19 and they fell for each other at once, marrying later the same year.

But Maurice, who died from a twisted intestine in 2003 aged 53, was battling alcoholism and it did not take long for cracks in the relationship to appear.

Lulu said in an interview for Piers Morgan’s Life Stories: “We thought we were king and queen of the world and were fabulous.

“The drinking was a part of it but we shouldn’t have got married in the first place… we should have just had a romance.

“I decided it had to end. He didn’t want it to end and it hurt him. I totally loved and adored him but… in love with him? I was probably in love with love.”

For Lulu, who was just 16 when she had her first hit with Shout, it was not her first celebrity love match.

A year before she married Maurice she had an affair with Monkees singer Davy Jones.

But she was left heartbroken when she found out the English-born star – who died from a heart attack in February – was also seeing his future wife Linda Haines at the time.

“I fell for him and thought he fell for me,” said Glasgow-born Lulu, now 63. “I went to LA to work at the Coconut Grove, Davy came to my opening night and I fell for him big-time.

“I had to leave LA and go to a gig in Miami and, because I hadn’t heard from him, I wondered what was going on… the next thing I heard was he was getting married.

“He had been living with that girl so he was coming out to see me and taking me out and the girl was living with him and I had no idea. I was heartbroken.”

Lulu’s second marriage was to hairdresser-to-the-stars John Frieda.

They tied the knot in 1977, had son Jordan the same year, and stayed together for 14 years. She wanted more children but suffered a miscarriage.

“Losing my second baby 11 years after Jordan was born was so painful I tried to sweep it under the carpet,” she told Morgan.

When the marriage broke down three years later, 14-year-old Jordan flew to America to live with John.

“I was devastated,” she said. “John didn’t want to leave Jordan behind and I was struggling so desperately to accept this second marriage was over that I felt I was going to die.

“I thought it would be better for Jordan to be in a boarding school in America with his father.”

In recent years Lulu, who still performs and writes music and appeared on Strictly Come Dancing last year, has been linked to Take That singer Jason Orange, 41, and Braveheart star Angus Macfadyen, 49.

She admits a fling with Angus but says there was no romance with the Take That heart-throb.

“He’s very, very cute but no, nothing happened,” she said.

But she refused to rule out another high-profile relationship in future and revealed she still has two major celebrity crushes… Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler, 64, and US President Barack Obama.

On her taste in men, she said: “For me it’s not about age, it’s not about being attracted to someone because they are young.
