Princess Eugenie Breaks Royal Protocol With an Unexpected Change in Her Baby Daughter’s Name Announcement — And the Detail Has Royal Watchers Taking Notice. The Princess quietly departed from a familiar royal tradition while introducing her newborn, making the announcement noticeably different from those that came before. Now, one carefully chosen change is drawing fresh attention to what Eugenie may be signaling about her daughter’s place within the Royal Family.

Princess Eugenie has introduced her newborn daughter, Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank, to the world — and the announcement included one detail that stood out from the way she and other non-working royals have recently shared photographs of their children.

The 36-year-old royal and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, announced their daughter’s full name on Monday, two weeks after she was born at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal. Alongside the announcement, Eugenie released three new family photographs — including unusually clear glimpses of baby Adelaide and her older brothers, August and Ernest.

Eugenie gives the public a glimpse of Adelaide

The first photograph showed Adelaide wrapped in a baby-blue blanket, with the side of the newborn’s face visible.

That marked a noticeable change from the first image Eugenie and Jack released following their daughter’s arrival. In the Aug. 4 photograph, Adelaide was lying on her front with her face turned away from the camera.

Another new picture featured five-year-old August and three-year-old Ernest spending time with their baby sister. Their faces were also visible — something Eugenie does not routinely do when posting photographs of her sons.

While she shares family moments more frequently than some other members of the royal family, Eugenie has often photographed her children from angles that make their faces less identifiable.

That made the latest set of pictures an unusual choice.

A different approach from Harry, Meghan and Beatrice

In recent years, several non-working members of the royal family have taken a particularly cautious approach to showing their young children online.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, for example, have not regularly shared direct photographs of the faces of Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five. Recent images posted by Meghan have generally shown the children facing away from the camera or with their faces obscured.

Princess Beatrice has taken a similarly private approach with her daughters.

When Beatrice shared the first photographs of Athena in January 2025, the baby’s face was largely concealed by the sleeve of her white babygrow. Her older daughter, four-year-old Sienna, has also rarely been photographed publicly and is often shown from behind.

Eugenie has been somewhat more open about sharing pictures of August and Ernest, although clear photographs showing their faces have remained relatively occasional.

Against that backdrop, her decision to include more visible images of all three children in Adelaide’s name announcement was particularly noticeable.

Eugenie and Jack welcomed their third child on Aug. 3. The baby was born at a hospital in Lisbon, where the family spends part of its time.

Both mother and daughter were reported to be doing well following the birth, while King Charles was said to be “delighted” by the family’s new arrival.

Adelaide joins older brothers August, five, and Ernest, three, and becomes the fifth grandchild of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson.

She is also 15th in the line of succession to the British throne.

Eugenie waited 14 days after Adelaide’s birth before publicly confirming her full name.

“2 weeks ago today we welcomed our girl to the world,” Eugenie wrote on Instagram. “And since then we’ve had the most special, cosy and love-filled time.”

The meaning behind Adelaide Elizabeth Annina

The couple also filled their daughter’s name with family and historical significance.

Eugenie explained that Adelaide reflects both English and Portuguese history — connecting two countries that she and Jack consider home.

The first name has links to Queen Adelaide, wife of King William IV, as well as Maria Adelaide of Portugal.

Elizabeth provides a direct family connection, honoring Eugenie’s late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

Annina, meanwhile, is believed to have been chosen because of a personal connection for Eugenie and Jack.

The name therefore combines royal history, the family’s ties to Portugal and a deeply personal tribute to the late Queen.

But alongside the meaning of Adelaide’s name, it was the photographs accompanying the announcement that represented one of its most unexpected details.

After initially introducing their daughter without showing her face, Eugenie and Jack chose a more personal approach two weeks later — giving royal watchers a rare glimpse of Adelaide alongside her two proud older brothers.
