Prince Harry appeared relaxed and in high spirits during his first public appearance since reports emerged that he and Meghan Markle are preparing to return to Britain with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

The Duke of Sussex, 41, was photographed smiling broadly at a veterans roundtable in Washington on Wednesday, only hours after news broke that the Sussex family is expected to relocate to the UK later this month for what has been described as an “extended period.”
The reported move would mark a significant change for Harry and Meghan six years after they stepped away from royal duties and established a new life in California. However, there is currently no indication that they intend to resume their former roles as working members of the Royal Family.
Harry makes upbeat appearance in Washington
Despite the intense speculation surrounding his family’s future, Harry appeared focused on his longstanding work supporting the military and veteran community.
The Duke, who spent 10 years in the British Army and completed two frontline tours in Afghanistan, attended a roundtable focused on expanding support for veterans.
Among those taking part was Jane Horton, senior adviser to US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Harry was also pictured speaking with Sarah Verado, chief executive of The Independence Fund, a nonprofit organization that supports wounded veterans and their families.
At another point during the event, he shared a light-hearted conversation with fellow veteran William Bringer.
The appearance came at a particularly significant moment, with reports about Harry and Meghan’s return to Britain dominating discussion around the Royal Family.
Sussexes expected to spend an extended period in Britain

According to reports, Harry and Meghan intend to move to Britain with Archie and Lilibet, who are expected to attend school in the UK.
The family is understood to be planning to live in a non-royal residence. Its location has not been disclosed for privacy reasons.
It also remains unclear whether the arrangement could eventually become permanent.
King Charles was reportedly informed by Harry on Sunday that his family planned to return later this month.
The Sussexes are nevertheless expected to retain their £11 million home in Montecito, California, where they have lived since moving to the United States. They also own a residence in Portugal.
Their return would therefore appear, at least initially, to represent the establishment of a substantial UK base rather than a complete abandonment of their life in California.
Six years after Harry and Meghan left royal life
The development comes six years after Harry and Meghan’s dramatic departure from life as working royals.
The couple, who married in 2018, announced their intention to step back from senior royal duties in early 2020 before eventually moving permanently to California in March of that year.
Following a 12-month review, Queen Elizabeth II confirmed that the couple could not continue with the responsibilities and duties associated with a life of royal public service while pursuing the arrangement they had proposed.
The late Queen also rejected the possibility of a “half in, half out” model under which Harry and Meghan could combine independent careers with selected royal duties. Harry subsequently lost his honorary military appointments.
Their departure caused significant controversy, particularly because the decision was announced without prior consultation with Charles, Camilla or Prince William.
Harry and Meghan initially spent time on Vancouver Island in Canada before settling in California.
Old controversies continue to follow the Sussexes

Their years away from Britain have done little to end the controversies surrounding the couple.
Earlier this year, claims about Meghan’s relationship with Palace employees resurfaced, including allegations that some staff had referred to her as “Duchess Difficult.”
Meghan has consistently and strongly denied bullying allegations, previously characterizing them as part of an orchestrated smear campaign against her.
Royal correspondent Valentine Low, who first reported allegations concerning Meghan and Palace staff in March 2021, claimed that some former employees remained deeply affected by their experiences even after the Sussexes had moved to the United States.
The original claims emerged shortly before Harry and Meghan’s televised interview with Oprah Winfrey, during which the couple made a series of allegations about their experiences within the Royal Family.
Prince William relationship remains a major obstacle
Harry’s possible return to Britain also places renewed attention on his fractured relationship with Prince William.
The brothers are not believed to have spoken meaningfully for years, while William and Catherine have reportedly been deeply hurt by claims and disclosures made following the Sussexes’ departure.
Harry’s 2023 memoir Spare, the couple’s Netflix series and their interview with Oprah all intensified tensions within the family.
Royal author Phil Dampier has suggested that relations between the brothers are now considerably worse than when they appeared together in 2021 to unveil a statue honoring their mother, Princess Diana.
Next year will mark the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death, creating an obvious opportunity for her sons to appear together again. Dampier, however, believes William may have little appetite for such a reconciliation.
According to the royal author, William’s priorities are now Catherine and their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
Signs of progress between Harry and King Charles
While Harry’s relationship with William remains deeply strained, there have been more encouraging developments between the Duke and his father.
Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet reportedly reunited privately with King Charles and Queen Camilla last month at Highgrove House in Gloucestershire.
The meeting was particularly significant because it came four years after Charles had last seen Archie and Lilibet.
Harry had previously criticized both his father and Camilla in Spare, but he travelled to Britain to see Charles in 2024 after the King’s cancer diagnosis was announced.
Their latest meeting has consequently been viewed as another step toward rebuilding their relationship.
Sources have suggested that Charles welcomes the prospect of seeing more of Harry and his family once they are spending significantly more time in Britain.
Harry is also reportedly hoping that his father will join him in opening next summer’s Invictus Games, although there has been no confirmation that this will happen.
Harry reportedly wants Archie and Lilibet to experience Britain
Another factor behind the reported return is Harry’s desire for his children to spend more time in his home country.
The Duke is said to have missed aspects of living in Britain and wants Archie and Lilibet to experience life there themselves.
The family had already begun strengthening its European ties before reports of the UK move emerged.
Three years ago, Harry and Meghan bought a property at the Costa Terra resort in Melides, Portugal. The family spent time there as recently as last month, with Meghan sharing photographs from their trip on Instagram.
For now, major questions remain unanswered, including exactly where the Sussexes will live, how their security arrangements will operate and whether their stay could ultimately become permanent.
What is clear is that Harry’s return would place him physically much closer to the Royal Family than at any point since 2020.
His smiling appearance in Washington offered little indication of the complicated royal discussions unfolding around him. But six years after leaving Britain for a new life across the Atlantic, Harry now appears to be preparing for another major change — one that could reshape not only his family’s future, but also his relationship with the monarchy he once left behind.
