King Harald’s Condition Declared ‘Very Serious’ as Royal Family Gathers at Hospital and Crown Prince Haakon Steps In
Norway is facing an anxious wait after the Royal Palace announced that King Harald V’s health had deteriorated to a “very serious” condition, prompting members of the Royal Family to gather at the 89-year-old monarch’s bedside in Oslo.
The dramatic update came on Thursday, August 27, after more than a week of treatment at Oslo University Hospital, Rikshospitalet. Queen Sonja and Crown Prince Haakon cancelled engagements as the King’s condition worsened, while Haakon continues to carry out the monarch’s constitutional duties as Regent.
Later the same day, the Royal Court issued another brief update saying the King’s condition remained unchanged.
Palace Issues Grave Update on King Harald

Concerns surrounding Harald intensified when the Norwegian Royal Court announced that his condition had become “very serious.”
The King has been receiving hospital treatment after developing health complications while already dealing with haemolytic anaemia, a condition in which red blood cells are destroyed faster than the body can replace them.
His latest health crisis began earlier in August. Treatment with cortisone for the blood disorder caused fluid to accumulate in his body, requiring hospital care.
The situation became more complicated when Harald developed a bacterial infection in his bloodstream. On August 23, the Palace said his health had deteriorated over the weekend, although he had responded to antibiotic treatment and his condition was described at that stage as stable.
Four days later, the assessment had become significantly more serious.
Royal Family Gathers Around the King

As concern deepened, members of Harald’s family gathered at the hospital.
Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit were seen arriving at Rikshospitalet on August 27. Reuters reported that members of the family spent several hours at the King’s bedside.
Queen Sonja and Haakon also cleared royal commitments as attention shifted entirely to Harald’s condition.
Outside the family, the atmosphere across Norway reflected the gravity of the Palace announcement. Hundreds of people gathered outside the Royal Palace in Oslo and in other Norwegian cities, with some leaving flowers as they waited for further information.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre joined the country in sending his thoughts to Harald and the Royal Family, expressing confidence that the King was receiving compassionate medical care.
Crown Prince Haakon Is Acting as Regent
With Harald unable to perform his duties, Crown Prince Haakon has assumed the role of Regent.
This is the constitutional arrangement used when the Norwegian monarch is abroad or unable to carry out his responsibilities because of illness. Norway’s Constitution provides for the Crown Prince, as the next person in the line of succession, to temporarily exercise the royal powers in those circumstances.
The Royal Court currently lists Haakon as Regent while his father remains on sick leave.
Haakon has therefore continued carrying out essential constitutional responsibilities while remaining closely involved with his family during the King’s hospitalisation.
The situation places particular attention on the Crown Prince, who has spent much of his adult life preparing for the responsibilities that will eventually come with succeeding his father.

A Difficult Period for the 89-Year-Old Monarch
Harald, who has been King of Norway since January 17, 1991, has experienced several health problems in recent years.
Earlier in 2026, he was hospitalised while holidaying with Queen Sonja in Tenerife, where he was treated for an infection and dehydration.
His health had already attracted considerable attention two years earlier after he became ill while travelling abroad and subsequently received a permanent pacemaker at Oslo University Hospital in March 2024. The procedure was successful.
Despite those difficulties, Harald continued carrying out royal responsibilities whenever his health allowed.
His latest hospitalisation, however, has prompted a markedly more serious statement from the Palace.

Another Health Crisis Within the Royal Family
The timing has made this an especially difficult period for Harald’s daughter, Princess Märtha Louise.
Her husband, Durek Verrett, has also been receiving treatment at Rikshospitalet, where he recently underwent a kidney transplant.
According to the original report, the procedure was successful. Märtha Louise and Verrett expressed profound gratitude to the donor, describing the transplant as giving him a second chance.
The circumstances mean that the Princess has been dealing simultaneously with her husband’s major surgery and her father’s worsening condition at the same hospital.
Norway Waits for Further News

Harald has occupied a unique position in Norwegian public life for more than three decades.
He became King following the death of his father, King Olav V, in 1991 and adopted the royal motto used by both his father and grandfather: “We give our all for Norway.”
His long reign and visibility during moments of national celebration and tragedy have made the latest Palace announcement particularly significant for Norwegians.
For now, Crown Prince Haakon remains Regent, the King remains under hospital care, and his family is close by.
The most recent official update offered neither improvement nor further deterioration, stating simply that Harald’s condition remained unchanged after being declared very serious earlier on August 27.
After a week in which earlier reports had offered some reassurance that he was responding to treatment, that sudden change in language has transformed concern into a much more solemn national vigil.
Norway is now waiting for the next update from the Palace.
