Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could soon find themselves living a very different kind of British life — and one potential Cotswolds neighbor has already delivered a remarkably blunt warning to the Duchess of Sussex.

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, the celebrated interior designer and television personality who lives in the Cotswolds with his family, says Meghan may discover that celebrity status carries little weight in his corner of the English countryside.

Instead, he believes authenticity will matter far more.

“I think she’s going to need to be very genuine,” Llewelyn-Bowen said, adding that locals in his part of the Cotswolds can “really sniff b******t” and quickly recognize when someone is not being themselves.

Despite the unusually direct remark, his comments were not intended as a rejection of the Sussexes. In fact, Llewelyn-Bowen said he would welcome Harry, Meghan and their children if they eventually became his neighbors.

The Sussexes’ return puts the Cotswolds under the spotlight

Harry and Meghan returned to Britain this week with their children, Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, in what could become their most significant period of time in the UK since they stepped away from royal duties and relocated to North America.

The family reportedly arrived at Birmingham Airport on Wednesday after traveling privately from California.

Their exact British home has not been publicly confirmed, but the Cotswolds has emerged as a possible destination.

The couple are reportedly considering properties in the area, while Archie and Lilibet are expected to begin school in Britain in September.

Their arrival at Birmingham Airport has also fueled speculation about a possible Cotswolds base, although the airport itself does not prove that the family has chosen the region.

If they do settle there, they would join a long list of wealthy and famous residents who have been drawn to the picturesque countryside.

But Llewelyn-Bowen believes Harry and Meghan may find the social atmosphere very different from the celebrity world they have known in California.

‘People are much less impressed by celebrity’

The designer explained that his particular part of the Cotswolds is not especially dazzled by famous names.

“It is going to be interesting to see how the Duchess fits in,” he said, noting that residents in the area are “much less impressed by celebrity.”

He pointed to Princess Anne as an example, suggesting that the senior royal could appear at a local train station without receiving the kind of attention one might expect elsewhere.

That lack of fuss, he suggested, is part of the charm of the community.

For Meghan, however, it could represent a significant adjustment.

After years surrounded by Hollywood celebrities, media executives and other high-profile figures in Montecito, she could find herself entering a world where being famous is considerably less important than simply becoming part of the community.

Meghan has been told to ‘be very genuine’

Llewelyn-Bowen’s strongest message was directed toward Meghan.

“I think she’s going to need to be very genuine,” he said.

His colorful warning that locals can “sniff b******t” has inevitably attracted attention given Meghan’s complicated relationship with British public opinion.

But he was describing his own observations of the local culture, rather than speaking for every resident of the Cotswolds.

And importantly, his comments were accompanied by an invitation rather than hostility.

He said he would be happy to have the Sussexes nearby and even joked that he could offer his professional expertise if they needed help decorating a new home.

The school gates could be the real test

For Harry and Meghan, everyday family life may ultimately prove more challenging than finding a house.

If Archie and Lilibet begin school in Britain as reported, the couple could find themselves encountering other parents, attending school activities and becoming part of a much smaller local community.

That would be a sharp contrast to their life in Montecito.

Llewelyn-Bowen jokingly suggested that Meghan should not arrive at the school gates with too many “airs and graces,” describing some of the local women as formidable personalities.

The broader message was clear: in a close-knit countryside community, celebrity may not automatically translate into social acceptance.

Harry could have an easier transition

Interestingly, Llewelyn-Bowen believes Harry may have an easier time finding his place in the area.

The Duke already has longstanding connections to Gloucestershire and the surrounding countryside. Harry and Meghan also previously lived in the Cotswolds shortly after their 2018 wedding.

That chapter eventually ended after concerns about privacy surrounding their rented home, with the couple later moving to Frogmore Cottage.

A return to the region would therefore mark a very different stage of their lives.

This time, they would reportedly be coming back as private citizens, with their children’s education playing a central role in the decision.

For Harry in particular, the move could offer a chance to reconnect with the country and the lifestyle he has repeatedly described as important to him.

A return to Britain does not necessarily mean leaving America

The Sussexes’ possible move should not necessarily be interpreted as a complete break with California.

Reports indicate that they intend to retain their Montecito home and could continue spending time in the United States, creating a transatlantic family life rather than abandoning America altogether.

That could leave the couple balancing two very different worlds: their established celebrity life in California and a quieter, more traditional existence in the English countryside.

For Meghan, that transition could be particularly revealing.

The Cotswolds may offer privacy, space and a more grounded environment for raising children — but it may also demand something that money and celebrity cannot easily provide. Acceptance.

The blunt warning ended on a friendly note

Despite the headline-grabbing language, Llewelyn-Bowen’s overall message was considerably warmer than his famous “sniff b******t” remark suggests.

He said he would welcome Harry, Meghan and their children as neighbors and even offered to help with the interiors of their potential new home.

His final assessment was more playful than hostile: the Cotswolds might not necessarily be “Meghan’s cup of tea.”

For now, however, the Sussexes’ long-term British address remains unconfirmed.

What is clear is that Harry and Meghan are spending more time in Britain, while Archie and Lilibet are reportedly preparing for school in the UK.

If the Cotswolds ultimately becomes their new home, the Sussexes may discover that country life comes with its own unwritten rules.

And according to one of the area’s most recognizable residents, the most important one may be the simplest of all:

Forget the celebrity status. Just be genuine.
